Just wondering what the weight of the Yamaha F300 at 562 lbs on the most rearward moment/arm will do to the tongue weight when on the trailer? It looks like boat is losing stern thruster, but it's still a good bit of weight bouncing around.

I'm already tongue light with the inboard diesel.

Also wondering if a 3 axle trailer would be a good option to get straight from factory? If I had a do-over, I'd definitely get a 3 axle for the current boat.

Wondering what % your current tongue weight is?

I would think that with a properly set-up trailer, a single 300 hp engine hanging off the rear wouldn't be an issue. After all, you commonly see twins (sometime even triples) hanging off the rear of the larger cc fishing boats.

I thought that the axels were placed under the trailer to accommodate (balance) the load.

The trailer should be set up to establish desired tongue load regardless. The biggest challenge with the OB configuration is that the center of gravity likely shifts more than with the inboard when tank levels change. There''s no getting around that so a compromise must be reached. Or always tow with tank levels full or empty(full being more practical).

I would be more worried about what those 500+lbs would do to the mounts when bouncing on roads. We all know the roads aren't the best around here.

As an aside.... I wonder what the additional Ins premium is when you also trailer a boat beside/including using it in the water and keeping at a moorage at times ? I know for my R-21EC which I trailer, the Ins company wanted to know how much trailering I would be doing each year.

Interesting question Baz, I have never been asked about towing the boat when getting insurance. However, I do get on the add on road service for the trailer so one would assume if there is a premium cost for towing it is in the cost somewhere.

Some years back for discussion of tongue weight I produced the following recommendations from the sources listed for calculating:
1. National Marine Manufacturers Assoc (NMMA)
5 - 7 % of the wt of the boat plus the wt of the trailer
2. Magic Tilt Trailers
8 - 12% of the weight the boat only
3. Continental Trailers
6 - 8% of the wt of the boat plus the wt of the trailer
This gives a bit of a range but if the low and high are eliminated the range becomes quite close. To achieve a recommended tongue weight, the boat can be moved somewhat on the trailer, but the position of the axles is the primary variable.

Regarding insurance, with my sailboat, I don't remember being asked how much trailering I would do. I do, however, remember being asked where I was storing the boat. If I recall correctly, storing the boat (on the trailer) at home was cheaper than if I were storing the boat elsewhere.

Yes, that was also true for me. On the hard means a lower Ins premium. 🙂
