We are considering trailering our Cutwater 28 (camping in the boat along the way) to Bella Coola, BC. Cruising for 2-3 weeks, then pulling out on our trailer and storing for a few weeks and returning to cruise the Great Bear Rainforest for another 5-6 weeks. We've read about the road into Bella Coola and the area but input or suggestions would be appreciated.

Not a great interior route for pulling a heavy load. Have you considered taking BC Ferries from Vancouver Island? Pricey, but so is the fuel and wear and tear across the mountains.

I'd make a bathroom stop before heading down that dirt road down into downtown Bella Coola. It has a hill that many have described as being down right scary. I'd also do some serious protection in advance on the boat to guard road rash caused by stones and the like flying off other vehicles including yours. Chipping up the bow and taking gel coat with it. Make sure your insurance is paid up!

One alternative, if you'd rather drive north than Cross the Queen on the water, is to launch at Kitimat. Or Prince Rupert. No trouble with the road to Rupert, good launching ramp, and truck/trailer storage facilities. We launch there heading for SE Alaska. Don't know exactly what's available in Kitimat.

Hi Marty,

We are the Western Canadian dealer for Cutwater and Ranger Tugs located on Vancouver Island. We have a valet service for hauling boats, storage and a full service shop available as well. If you choose to come to the island, we can drop your boat in at Port Hardy or somewhere along the East coast of the island, to avoid wear and tear, store your truck and trailer, then pick you up after your trip and store the boat in our yard until you return (we would store in Port Alberni, 40 Miles VIA water from broken group/west coast of the island if you choose to spend sometime out here as well).

If we can be of service, please e-mail me: brad@portboathouse.com or call 1-877-283-2628.

Thanks,

Brad Armstrong

Thank you for your comments. Prince Rupert was also on our itinerary and may be a better choice than pulling a trailer to Bella Coola. We will look into facilities near Kitimat as well.

I trailered one of my previous boats from Prince Rupert to Florida via Seattle. Towing from Prince Rupert is a piece of cake. Very good road conditions all the way, and plenty of services available.
