Ok I've got a good laugh for you. Lisa and I left Traverse City, Michigan today and drove 280 miles, across two bridges, cleared customs and arrive in Spanish Ontario to launch our Kismet for a two week cruise of Canada's beautiful North Channel. We arrived at the marina and prepped the boat for its maiden splash into Canadian waters. The lines were set, the fenders were hung and the drain plug was installed, we were ready to go......or so I thought. I backed our Ranger Tug R 27 down the ramp, stopped to release the bow strap and hook and proceeded to back down the ramp, but the boat did not want to release itself from the constraints of the trailer. When I stopped and got out Lisa asked me if the trailer should be floating and I stated that that was impossible! Not to be deterred I hopped onto the boat, started the Yanmar 180 and just as I'm ready to put the pedal to the metal into reverse a lightening bolt went off in my mind that highlighted the fact that I'd forgotten to take the trailer straps off before my initial launch. After reconnecting the bow strap and hook I pulled the trailer and boat out of the water, took the trailer straps off and had a successful launch. I guess the lesson learned for us (me) is that no matter how long you've boated something is always bound to surprise you.

I've done the exact same thing, Jim. But, fortunately, it was on my 21-footer, so not such a ghastly sight.
Enjoy the North Channel...you and Lisa gonna make it to the Ranger Rendezvous this fall?

We'd love to be their this fall however it's not in the cards until next year when we plan on being in your neck of the woods for three months cruising. Have a grand summer.

Jim

Been there and done that!
Fortunately, only once.
It is not the end of the world.
Enjoy your cruise.

Good news is, you know the straps work! I'd just tell onlookers you were testing them.

Have a great cruise. We look forward to crossing wakes next season.

Cheers,

Bruce

Best lessons learned are from mistakes. I have notes etched in by my winch that say, install plug for bilge! Guess what I forgot once?

What's that trailer weigh, about 2,000+ pounds? Good test to see how much you can load in/on the boat and still have her on her waterline. 😉

Jim, as methodical as I know you two to be it is clear that Murphy never takes a day off...
At least you are not a youtube sensation with the truck and the trailer underneath the boat like some I have seen...
ROAM has a check sheet to work from, for the asking
What I have found from a lifetime of flying is that an all inclusive check sheet will be ignored in the end... It needs to be succinct and short - only those items that will cause a crash if skipped... For launching it is only a few items that are critical... Lots of stuff is desirable, but that is a separate issue...
This is my check list on a card stuck up over the helm

Plg-Stp Dkln - Fnd-Th-Ky Eng-BHk-Lnch

Which translates as:
PLUG - in
STRAPS - off
DOCK line - on

FENDERS - hung
THRUSTERS- on
KEY - in ignition and bump starter

back down until wet

Start ENGINE
BOW Hook- off
LAUNCH
