Just bought a 2008 Ranger tug with 110 hp yanmar. Manual says to use engine oil #20 or 30 in tranny. Is it alright to use a multigrade oil instead? I'm thinking it will make no difference even with synthetic multigrade. Manual is 11 years old so probably an update would be appropriate.

I have the 180 HP. Usually you use a single viscosity oil in the transmissions. I would use what it says. On mine it is a straight 30 weight. The manual might be old, but is current for the engine.

A point to consider. If you have a splash transmission that does not have a filter element do not use oil that has a detergent. On the Ranger 21 with a splash transmission 30 weight non detergent oil is recommended.

I have a 2008 R-25 with the Yanmar 110. I've been using straight 30 weight oil for the transmission with no problems for 2700 hours. I change it about every three years.
