In the four years we have had our boat it seems I have to top off the fluid in our transducer with RV potable antifreeze about every 4-5th time out. We trailer a lot so at first I figured it was due to vibration from going down the road which does contribute. I wrapped the cap in duct tape to keep it from vibrating lose which helps some but the problem is still there. In searching this site some have noted the base coming lose or the cap missing an O ring. Mine looks fine with no leaks on the base and the O ring is there albeit a bit thin.

It’s more of an annoyance than anything except a couple times the timing of losing my depth reading was right when I needed it. Curious if anyone else has run into this issue? Thoughts on how to resolve other than replacing the transducer?

Thanks!

When we first bought our R-29, I had the same problem. I found that coating the O-ring with vaseline largely cured the leaking, and went nearly two years without having to add fluid. Last month, however, I found that the base (or cup) had separated completely from the hull due, presumably, to vibration over time and/or the repeated twisting from the removal and replacement of the cap.

I just completed cleaning the old silicone sealant used by the factory to secure the base/cup to the hull, and reattached it using 4200, with a bead of LifeSeal around the base as an extra precaution.

I wouldn’t be too assured that you don’t have a leak around the base. In addition to applying vaseline to the O-ring, you might try running a bead of silicone sealant or LifeSeal around the base/cup where it’s attached to the hull.

Will give it a shot. Thanks!
