I have a 2015 R31-CB, luxury edition. I have the transmission fluid and filter but not sure how to do the service. Can you provide a guide to doing this?

thanks,

I have changed the transmission oil every 100 Hrs. The ZF oil and filter change is straight forward. Below is a photo of the filter and o-rings. I purchase mine directly from Volvo. I just used the example below for viewing.

https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead ... xBh&adurl= Use this photo for reference only. #3 you will not see this is an optional magnet.

Use a metric Allen wrench to remove the filter housing cover. After loosening the bolt pry up lightly using the tab on the cover. https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=ht ... egUIARCjAg

Once the filter is removed suck the oil out thru the filter pick up in the housing. After all oil is removed, remove the dip stick and put the oil suction pickup tube used for oil removal and suck from the bottom of the housing at this location. Once fluid is removed fill the transmission ATF Dextron III filling in the port where the filter goes and checking level at the dip stick location. When the housing is full to designated level replace filter o-rings, Install the filter to the cover ( do not install in the transmission) the filter must be held to the cover using the small o-ring and then set into the transmission. To tighten push down on the cover and snug the bolt. Confirm the cover is level all the way around when installed and tightened. Torque on the bolt is 4 to 6 ftlbs. Run the engine for a few minutes shut down wait for 10 minutes check level. Do not over fill.

I purchased the oil and filter from Ranger parts department. Are all necessary parts within the filter package? I ask because I don't have them with me currently (on the boat). thanks,

If it is a Volvo Part# yes.

In looking at the RT-31 IB Onboard Spares order form, which fluid do I use to service the transmission?

thanks,

ATF (Dexron II, III) Volvo does sell transmission fluid. It is "very pricey" I used it twice then switched to Valvoline™ DEX/MERC ATF. I change the fluid and filter every 100 to 150 hrs while cruising or once a year @ 100 hrs. I sample the fluid using Blackstone labs. The reports came back identical using either brand.

Is Chevron ATF suitable for The Volvo D4-300 engine as transmission fluid?

As long as it is or rated as(Dexron II, III)

Hello

Just planning my first transmission oil change on my D4-260.The transmission (Reverse Gear is a HS63AE-C) Brian, can I follow the same procedure you detailed for ZF? Also, does the engine need to be run to warm up transmission oil before doing the oi change? TIA

The Volvo HS63AE-C is a ZF reverse gear. Yes same procedure.

How much fluid for the job?

Thanks

Brian,

My D3 manual for my reverse gear clearly states to put the filter in the filter cavity and then put the cap on. Can you please explain why you suggest to attach the filter to the cap and then install the filter/cap. Was this a correction to the manual?

Thanks

There is no correction in the owners Manual. The procedure is in the ZF Manual.

Turn the filler cap counter-clockwise with a 6 mm Allen Key and remove the cap together with the filter that is fitted to the cap.

Pull the filter element off the filler cap. Fit the new 'O' rings and push a new filter element onto the filler cap 'O' ring.

Install the filter and filler cap assembly and turn the Allen Key clockwise to fasten the filler cap

The filter has two opening sizes. A small diameter and a large diameter. The ring in the bottom of the filter housing does not come with the filter kit and should be inspected each time the filter is changed. If you drop the filter into the housing and set it on the bottom O ring you are not sure of a proper alignment of the cap o-ring into the filter. If the top o-ring is not installed properly into the filter this could cause an air leak. The filter housing is not under positive pressure it is "negative pressure". The filter housing is the suction side of the oil pump. Improper fittings of the filter could allow contaminants to by pass the filter and this could cause damage to the internal components. Dropping the filter in the housing gives you a 50/50 chance of proper filter installation. Installing the filter to the cover and fitting it to the o ring gives you 100%

Thanks Brian. I did not have the ZF manual. I am one to read manuals, it’s a shame Volvo Penta provides incorrect information.
