Trim tabs on R23

Hi all. Happy summer. So almost out of nowhere the trim tabs are no longer responding to the up down switch at the helm. One tab hydraulic last year (2018 boat). This one appears more electrical. Checked 3 amp fuse in head fusebox, but appears ok. What now. Any other circuits i need to inspect. As always thanks for advice in advance!!!!

I can not speak for what type of tabs you have on your boat but I troubleshoot a trim tab no actuation issue on a R23 at the 2022 Ranger Tug rendezvous in SWF. This R23 did not have hydraulic cylinders it had electric Lenco Tabs. The issue with this boat was only one side would actuate. I started at the plug end at trim tab connector(aft compartment) Unplugged the harness and checked for voltage while the boat owner pushed the rocker switch for bow down. No power! I then checked the fuse that powers the switch. Power going into the switch. Next removed the switch (PIA) once the switch is removed unplug the Green white plug (starboard) Red white plug (port) using a VOA meter 12V should be read when the switch is depressed if no voltage the switch is bad. That was the case in this boat. We had power at red white plug Port side cylinder worked. No power at red white starboard cylinder did not work. The switch was bad in this case.


To start troubleshooting use the owners manual and look at the wire schematic. Confirm there is power to the switch. Confirm there is power at the orange wire with ignition switch on. Confirm there is power at green white plug and red white plug. If all that checks ok check power at the cylinder red white plug and green white plug. If you have power at each plug then cylinder is bad. I doubt both cylinders are bad. In most cases bad fuse, bad connection, bad switch.

There are only a couple of connections on the Lenco Trim Tabs. Fused connection to the switch and connections to each trim tab from the switch. Those connections are pretty easy to access if you pull the refrigerator.
