Troll with Ranger 21EC

Greetings NEWF.....

Your rails look like mine....the Scotty set-up looks quite simple......I don't have crab pots to dodge, and our nets are less numerous than previous..... I have generally run 12 or 15 # weights on my old Cannons also.....the rails feel pretty sturdy.......maybe time for new Scotty's.....how do you like yours??????

Where do you pull power from for your Scotty's.....additional battery or house or thruster???

My Yanmar seems to want to troll at closer to 2.4 Knots.....most of the time the bigger fish ( especially Steel Head)seem to agree with that faster pace, but I may try a drift bag to slow for the non takers....

and , yes, I can see cockpit steer or autopilot in my future.....anyone have any input on those?????

I appreciate the response...tight lines.....

No Issues with the Scotty DR's after 4 years with lots and lots of use other than I have replaced the depth counter in each of them as they got moisture inside of them and froze up during one of my winter trips. The DR's are powered by the house battery.

Hi Newf....

It seems that Scottys are less popular in this area...lots of Cannons and Big Johns....

What model Scotty do you use....the mounts look like a good fit for my boat......

I may add an electric auxiliary motor and a pair of batteries and charger under the aft bench seat to power the riggers and electric....

Still leaving the options open and collecting suggestions to do a winter project....

thanks...take care....

Back from my first Salmon trip on the R21EC and it was pretty good. Fished northern Vancouver Island in the Port McNeill area for 4 days. Trolling speed is hard to say as I was always in some sort of tide, but SOG ranged from 3 kts to less than 0.5 kts. It must have been slow enough as we caught a fair number of Sockeye, which like a slow troll. I got 5 Sockeye on my rod alone and lost 1 at the boat and had lots of strikes. Sockeye are sometimes tough to land as they have a soft mouth and we use only barbless hooks in BC; it is the law. I also got a nice Spring salmon of 15 lbs. and a couple of coho (which I had to release; wild coho are closed in the area). I used Scotty manual downriggers; one 1080 Strongarm and an old Depthking, with the short curved solid boom. I built the mounts myself (I will post pix as soon as I figure out this site!) and they worked fine. Just be sure to use a couple of 1/4" by 6" bolts in the mount to make sure they stay together. The Strongarm has it's own rod holder, and there is a rail mount for the other rod (we fished 2 rods and did not stack lines on the downrigger).

I'll be down at the boat tomorrow and I'll try to take some pictures. Bring the engine to operating temp, loosen the lock nut on the throttle linkage at the engine, turn the adjustment until you reach desired RPM, re-tighten the lock nut. You might have to make a couple of adjustments to get it just right. On mine a no-load adjustment to 700 RPMs gives me an actual RPM of 600 in gear. V-P suggests not going below five hundred RPM because of oil pressure issues.

Please note that my figures aren't the "official" V-P specs. They're just the opinion of a mechanic I know that's probably worked on more V-P engines than most people. He also has a D1-30 in his sailboat. If I remember right V-P suggests 850 RPMs and if your boat has the five year warranty running non-spec settings might void it.

And you're right about the boat moving at idle. No weight, no draft, and a lot of area to catch the wind. They're a feather on the water and I've found that wind affects them more than current at times. That's where that over-sized rudder and the bow thruster can come in handy...use them right and you can make that little boat dance.[/quote]

Finally (I know, I know, it has been almost a year) got around to trying to adjust the idle speed on my D1-30.....
My engine idles at 1100 in neutral and 1000 rpm in gear! Needless to say that is way too fast. Thing is I tried to adjust the idle but even with the srcew all the way out it doesn't bring down the idle. The throttle lever on the engine seems to bottom out at 1100??? Is this normal??
Am I doing something wrong??? (Wouldn't be the first time.... 😉 )
