It’s time to replace the tires on our GMC 2500 so I’d like to get thoughts on what my fellow Tugnutters have experienced with truck tires. The current tires, which I’ve been happy with, are Michelin Defender LTX265/70R18 with 60,000 miles on them. New Michelins price out at around $1200.00, all in. Your thoughts or recommendations on other like type op tire options?

Jim, I have used Michelin LT tires for years. I have the same LTX 265/70R18 load range E on my 2016 Hd 2500 with 43000 flawless miles. We all have our personal opinion of what tire is the best. I'm not sure which is best but I can say after 30 years of using Michelin tires I have never had a issue and always achieved safe high milage usage.

Brian:

That’s the same experience I’ve had. I’ll most likely go this way but I felt it was a good idea to ask the question, as some times things change. Anyone else?

I have Michelin LTX AT2 265/70R 18 on my Tundra. Have put about 200,000 miles on that model of tire between my Tundra and a different size on my previous 4Runner. Averaging about 45,000 to 50,000 miles per set. I’m not a gentle driver. About 35,000 miles of the 200,000 miles total have been towing heavy trailers. Good tires, never any problems. About $275 each list price but they go on sale quite often.

I had about 70,000 miles on my original Michelin LT275/70R18 on my Ford F-350 when I replaced them with the same tires. The originals still had some life left in them as they passed RI state inspection. I have never gotten that mileage on a set of other brand tires on any vehicle.

In my replacement truck tire research I found that Cooper has a well rated 265/70R18 tire that is $900 installed, $400 less then the Michelin. Made in the USA. Anyone have experience and or thoughts on Cooper tires?

Jim, have you tried discount tire direct.com?

Because they were models made in USA (some are not), I have Cooper tires on two vehicles. So far, I am pleased with them.

Jim, I have used Tirerack.com at times and been happy. You might want to chat with their salesman. I am about to pull the trigger on a new set of winter tires and wheels for a Duramax and their bid looks good.
Be warned: depending on where you are in relation to their warehouses a set of four tires can slam down on the porch the next morning.

Jim,

My F250 came with Michelin LTX A/T 2’s. LT275/65R20. I was very pleased. I got just shy of 60000 miles and replaced with the same for about $1200 because of the performance and longevity. I have used Cooper tires in the past and have been pleased with them, however, they don’t seem to last as stated. If memory serves me correctly, my Cooper 50000 mile tires only lasted 35-40,000.

I started this post so I thought I’d post the final results and make note of a couple of things. I ended up purchasing Michelin Defender LTX 265/70R18, same as I had. I purchased them thru my GMC dealer so I’ll have more warranty options while traveling. Interestingly enough there was a GM tire rebate of $140.00 so the total price was actually less then our local tire stores. I was expecting to replace brakes at the same time, as we now have 100,000 miles on our GMC and the brakes have never been touched. I was pleasantly surprised when I was told the rotors are in great shape and the brake pads are still at 75%. I credit this to the HD brakes that came with the truck and the diesel exhaust brake system that came on the HD Trailering package. All in all a very good day, truck wise.
