Well, when Ranger told me they don't offer a 1940's era, V-12,, Roll Royce Merlin, or the same vintage Allison, you can imagine my surprise! So I said, "OK, let's just go with your standard L-7 Lycoming gas turbine, helicopter engine." I about fell off my chair when he said he Ranger does not offer and 2000 hp horsepower turbine! In reality, I love the quiet, vibration free, power of the Volvo. I'm so excited to get out there! I have some learning to do, then some great places to go! Chip Hanauer, Theboatguy.com

Welcome to the wonderful world of quality cruising. We'll look forward to crossing wakes (the Volvo variety), and seeing on the docks. We're in M20 at Elliott Bay.

Cheers!

I second Bruce's welcome! Congratulation on your Volvo powered R-27, we will have plenty to converse about on your Poulsbo winter cruise, if memory serves me right I will be moored next to you in my Volvo powered R-27 that weekend.

Chip, just curious. How much fuel does a 2000 hp turbine use? Gotta imagine the numbers are pretty large compared to the tug....

We burned about about 60 gallons a heat, depending on course size. The turbo Allison burned alcohol and hence burned nearly twice that amount. Glad it wasn't on my credit card!

Just remember, you need to wait until your warranty expires on the engine before ANY modifications are done to that 200HP Volvo. 😀

Now you tell us Andrew, the performance chip which I installed on my Cummins 150 turning the wick up by 300hp voided the warranty.

Nothing like the sound of a Merlin as it idles by or the feel as thrust is advanced and the tail wheel comes off the ground. Wonder if I can get an audio chip installed .....

Still somewhere in China.
