OK, so what are you guys using for oil in you Twin Disc gears? Both the manual and info on the Twin Disc website call for a SAE 20 or 30 single viscosity oil with API spec CD. Well CD is an obsolete spec. On top of which I've been to four different suppliers here in town and so far have found a total of one gallon jug of single vis oil. Everything sold around here nowadays is xWy something or other. I'm thinking fill it with hydraulic oil and call it good....

Don't use hydrolic oil. Use a straight weight. The lettering used can be confusing. However if the oil rating is obsolete you can use a higher alphabetical letter, which in most cases is a higher specification of the obsolete oil. As an example CF is okay because F is higher in alphabet than D.

Finally found some single vis "C" grade oil at a NAPA store, by luck. When I asked for it, all they had was NAPA brand SAE 30 "S" grade. After the clerk left me pondering whether the S grade was adequate, I happened to notice an old, dusty gallon jug of Shell SAE 30 "heavy duty"(i.e. grade CJ). Of all the things to deal with in commissioning, whodathunk finding a gallon of oil would be a challenge :? I guess that due to our weather extremes up here, no one uses single vis oil any more.
