An R27 Classic owner with whom I am acquainted bought his boat to cruise the Great Loop. He made a couple of test cruises and found the electrical power system lacking. He spent last winter completely revamping the electrical power system. And I mean COMPLETELY.

He brought all high-current electrical cabling up to ABYC standards.

He replaced the house batteries with two 200ah LiFePo4 batteries with a 200ah battery management system. These batteries are charged by a DC-DC charger with a built-in MPPT solar controller for the 340 watt solar panel. The DC-DC charger will put up to 30 amps solar and 50 amps engine into the house batteries.

He replaced the stock battery charger and inverter with a 60 amp 3-bank charger and a 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter.

He installed a Victron BMV-712 battery monitor with helm display and Bluetooth.

I have seen these upgrades and they were exquisitely done. They reflect his background, experience, and training in electrical systems. With this electrical system, one can stay on the hook longer than the water supply and holding tank can last. In a marina, the only time you need to pay for power is to run the air conditioning or reverse cycle heat.

While the boat was laid up for the winter, the bottom was completely redone, barrier coat and all. It is the best bottom paint job I have ever looked at.

A couple months ago, he and his wife set out on the loop and, after a few hundred miles, they found the space limitations of the boat just wasn’t right to continue. They returned to their marina on Lake Erie and listed it with a broker. I have absolutely zero financial interest in this boat or its sale. I just want to make Tugnuts readers aware of its availability because of its unique and well-executed electrical system. It is a one-of-a-kind Classic Ranger Tug.

I hope this doesn’t violate forum rules, but here is a link to the broker handling the boat. They are a well-known and respected Ranger Tug dealer.

Having been on the Great Loop with two other people on a classic Ranger Tug, I definitely agree that it's a little tight for two or more people on a trip that length. Those upgrades sound spectacular. I hope the boat finds a good home.
