I need to update my g2 Vision card, but I am nervous about messing it up :-(

Does anyone have experience in doing this? It's the SD card that slots into my Garmin 7215 chart plotter.

Thanks in advance!

Perhaps call Garmin support and ask them for someone familiar with that unit to walk you through the steps. Or find a local dealer and trade them coffee/donuts? Worst case just go for it, pop in the new card, and follow on screen instructions. I've done mine once and it wasn't bad. If things go wrong it's only electronics and you have plenty of people here willing to help.

If you can't wait for help, my upgrade was fairly easy. Make sure your connected to a steady power source so the unit doesn't lose power during upgrade. You can also google or visit the Garmin website for the manual and it should include instructions.

Ps- did you know Garmin stands for Gary and Min? The two founders. They do about $3 billion in revenue and have 10,000 employees. Ranger sent one of their expert techs to my boat this year to help me with a issue and he shared some great boat stories. Great company and everything Garmin works very well on our Cutwater,

Thanks for the encouragement!

This is a little different that plugging a unit into my pc - I have to overwrite the SD card. However, wish me luck 🙂

We found the update went fairly smooth too following the onscreen directions. Discovered that SD cards used in the 7215 must be formatted on a PC, not a Mac and the Garmin 7215 only accepts 2gig cards and they are getting harder to find in the stores.

Thanks for the important tip!!

Hopefully you've registered your chartplotter with Garmin and have an account with the serial no. of your device.

Anyway, you'll have to take a freshly formatted sd card to the boat and insert it into the slot on the chartplotter as described in this article from Garmin:

http://support.garmin.com/support/s...caseId={60b357f0-418b-11df-d1c1-000000000000}

that puts an xml file on the card with your device serial no.

now take that card back to your pc and download the update onto that sd card, then go back to the boat and insert into the chartplotter.

I finally made it a habit to keep an sd card at home prepped for the next update when it downloads.

Thank you, good tip!

Update: I was able to update my g2 vision card and it appears to work.

Also, I followed the directions for creating an update for the built in maps, except a 2 GB SD card no longer works, as the download is too large. I used an 8 GB card and I got the message on the Garmin page that my download process on my PC was successful, but my chart plotter tells me the map format is not recognized. The updates from that download were unsuccessful - would not load :-(

I think I will contact Garmin next....
