Hello,
I would like to upgrade anchor on my new R-25 OB. I am open to all suggestions. I have considered a Rocna but would entertain other options. Thanks Paul K
 
Rocna seems to be the popular choice. I have a Mantus on my 29 and it also holds great in the PNW.
 
I’ve also heard good things about Rocna anchors. We’re planning to get one for our boat.
 
I too am a Rocna fan. Had a 10 Kg on my old R-25 Classic and bought a new 10 Kg for our current C-28 the first month of ownership. I know some folks like the Vulcan made by the same company.
For an emergency anchor I have a 25 lb Mantus M1 because it stores folded up. Haven’t needed the Mantus in the 9 years I’ve had it. Came close one time when we had a hard time retrieving our Rocna in Desolation Sound. I just feel better when cruising on the hook knowing I have the Mantus onboard.
 
Thank you all for your thoughts. According to what I’ve read and heard, Rocna seems to be the favorite among us. It appears that the 13 lb. Rocha is what is recommended for my R 25. Also, any thoughts on changing or upgrading anything else to accommodate this anchor?

In Florida you might be ok with the Rocna 6 Kg (13 lbs) in normal conditions. I’m in the PNW where that weight anchor is small for a R-25. I went with the Rocna 10 Kg (22 lbs) per the Rocna sizing chart. While the 13,000 pounds of holding for the 10 Kg anchor was high, I thought the 2,200 pounds of holding with the 6 Kg Rocna was seriously undersized for a 7,600 pound R-25!

The Rocna 10 Kg fit just fine on the R-25 Classic. I’d also recommend at least 50 ft of chain regardless of the anchor size.

PS: I believe the stock anchor on the R-25 O/B is 16 lbs (7.5 Kg) with 50 ft of chain.

I am of the opinion that anchor is not as important as the chain, I have a Lewmar Claw and 135' of 5/16" chain. Normal anchor is in 30' ft for water (Current & Wind in River) and lay out 100' to 125' of chain. Anchor never seems to come up with mud, and no need to break it out.
FWIW.... the towed Barges and Tugs anchor in the River by just laying down around a 1,000' of tow wire to the bottom of the River.
 
My thoughts on sizing an anchor. Follow the anchor manufactures sizing recommendations. When sizing the anchor take into consideration the weight of the boat, the size of the boat and how much "windage" it has. A 25' Ranger Tug on the hook in 30 mph winds is not the same as a 25' center console. Close to the same weight same length and beam but a lot more surface area for the wind to catch anchored with a Ranger or Cutwater. When I owned my C26 I replaced the undersized Lewmar Bruce with a Rocna 10. I did make some modifications replacing the light duty anchor roller assembly with a heavier design double roller. This gave me more comfort when anchored, retrieving the anchor and anchor storage when operating the boat.

I sold this boat and purchased a Mainship Pilot 34. It had a Danforth anchor. I had confidence in the Rocna and that was going to be the replacement anchor. The problem, the roll bar would not fit properly under the pulpit. I looked at the Vulcan and Mantus anchors both similar design. The Mantus seemed to have better reviews. The tipping point was Mantus had a Spring time sale 25 % off. With this sale I could justify purchasing a stainless steel anchor. I purchased the M2 35lbs stainless steel. I hoped for the same results that I had with the Rocna ( No anchor Drag) We anchored over 60 days during our Loop trip. We did encounter some high winds during anchorages and a few storms that produced gust over 50 mph. The M2 kept us rock solid and never dragged once. It was easier to set when we were in weedy areas or rocky bottoms when compared to the Rocna. This is not to say the Rocna did not set in either of those conditions it did. The biggest advantage the M2 stainless had over the Rocna was it was always clean when it came up. To be fair about this the Rocna was galvanized. I purchased new ground tackle for the Mainship rode 200' 5/8" 8 plait and 50' 5/16 stainless steel chain. The stainless chain and anchor was a delight!!! I also added an anchor wash to the bow. I did this on the Cutwater and we used it all the time. When the Galvanized chain would come up it always had mud stuck ti it. The same with the anchor. Not the case with stainless steel. I never used the anchor wash down during the trip. I did wash the anchor a few times when we were at a marina to clean out the areas where the shank and fluke are bolted. It would get mud packed in it.

Rocna is a good choice. Take a look at the Mantus Stainless Steel It works well and it is pretty !!!
 
Now there is a new design for Rocha Vulcan, with a roll bar. All I know about it is the ad that came out. I have had Danforth, CQR, Bruce, Lewmar plow and 2 different Vulcans. All have worked well. Really happy with Vulcan. I wonder if anyone has done a test on same size SS vs Galvanized anchors. Seem to me the shiny slippery looking Ss hook would drag more easily than the galvanized.I had a SS copy of a CQR, that worked fine. Good luck on anchor choice. Inquests everybody knows Rocha is sort of anchor spelled backwards.

The stainless steel anchors also require constant polishing. Lol

This is a misconception of many that the shiny pretty stainless steel anchor will look bad after use. I have proof that that is a misconception. We completed the loop this fall. We anchored over 60 nights plus several times waiting for Locks, bridges, and tides. The anchor was in rocks, sand, mud, weeds and a combination of all. It comes up clean and shines no differently now than it did the day I took it out of the box. The chain is also shiny and clean. The Galvanized Rocna after one year of use was discolored and looked like a galvanized anchor that was used. I'm not saying it looked bad, but it sure didn't look pretty like the anchor hanging off my pulpit. I like things to shine on my boat. Anchor included.
 
I can put about 160 gallons of gas into my tank for the difference between a galvanized and SS on a Rocna. And I don’t feel guilty for not cleaning my galvanized anchor. 🙂

I'm with Martin. Looks like you actually use it. But shiny is good also. Personal preference.
 
I too agree with Martin. Can not imagine any functional difference between a 10 kg galvanized Rocna and a 10 kg stainless Rocna. To me a stainless anchor is nice - looks great but really just bling. Unfortunately, I don’t have money burning in my wallet to spend on bling things. Especially on a $$$$ item that could easily end up on the bottom after being wedged between rocks, snagged on a cable or otherwise stuck and impossible to retrieve.
All my “spare” boat bucks goes into functional improvements or safety gear. A satellite phone is next on my list.
But hey, if you’ve got the bucks - go for it! The stainless anchors sure do look pretty!
 
Wow, thank you all for the positive response. Also thank you “cruisingElvinRay” for the very educational video on your anchor setup. Everyone has been extremely helpful on making my decision to move forward with this project.
 
We recently purchased a 22 RT31CB which is equipped with what I assume is the factory supplied 10 kg Lewmar "claw". My research seems to indicate that is the least effective (and cheapest) anchor available. Apparently it's a knock-off of the original Bruce anchor. Considering upgrading to a bit heavier Mantus M2 or similar. Has anyone found an alternative that will fit on the factory installed bow roller on the RT31?
