Subject: Use of the Kicker motor for the new 2018 R-27
My understand for steering the 9.9HP Yamaha kicker motor on the new R-27 is that it's controlled via a 'tie bar' with the main Yamaha 300HP engine. That is, steering the kicker motor means the main engine is also being moved and can act somewhat as a rudder. I don't see an issue with this at this time, and unlike steering the kicker motor on the R-23 which is independent from the main engine and controlled via wireless control and remote, the steering control for the new R-27 is via the helm or autopilot which has its own remote control. Thus both the R-23 and the new R-27's kicker motor steering can be done with a remote and for the new R-27, also via the helm.
As I've not used a 'tie bar' steering mechanism before I'm wondering if others who may have can shed some light on its +ives and -ives.
The reason for using a 'tie bar' steering mechanism on the new R-27 vs. wireless control on the R-23 is because on the new R-27 there's less room between the main engine and the kicker motor which means the wireless control box that is utilized for the R-23's kicker motor interferes with the main engine on the new R-27.
