Has anyone tried getting a fairly thin (1.5-2") gel-foam mattress topper and cutting it to fit? The V-berth on our new R27O/B is very irregular, due to the 'V', curved sides and head-door cutouts...and the mattress feels hard as a brick.
Any other suggestions appreciated.

We have a R25SC and found the same issue with a hard mattress. We used a queen size memory foam topper from Costco and using the existing cushions as the template were able to mark out and cut a 2 piece topper with a seam in the middle. Using an electric knife it was fairly easy to cut the memory foam. It is now very comfortable.
Not sure if the R27 is a larger size.

We did the same with cutting the Costco memory foam to fit using standard utility knife.

We also cut a memory foam topper to fit. It was very easy to do.
I think we should all just consider the factory beds as box springs, not mattresses.

Why do you have a seam down the middle? Isn’t it one big piece of foam?

This is a great idea I’ll have to do this on my r21.

I’ve heard of people swapping out the cushions inside as well with something softer.

Also some other good posts on this topic:

It’s a bit hard to explain but the width of the V berth is wider than the queen size foam topper. We made a pattern of 1/2 of the v berth ( bow to stern) using the cushions. By doing opposite directions on the pattern it was possible to get full width of the v berth from one piece of foam. There are some spray adhesives that you can glue it together if you wish but we found the 2 pieces easier to handle. Making it a snug fit there are no issues with having the seam in the middle.

Fluid Motion uses a proprietary form of high density concrete for their Ranger Tug and Cutwater v-berth cushions. We used a 3” thick 3.5 pound density queen sized memory foam topper cut down the middle for our v-berth. It’s great! Tonight is night nine in a row on it with no complaints at all!

Cool cool. Sounds like you got creative. I’m thinking I won’t have that issue on my r21. I imagine a queen or king topper, cut to size, would do it. I’d probably go 3’ + also like Scross did so it really makes a difference.

The idea of a big bulky 1-1/2 to 3" thick extra hunk of foam up in my v-berth just didn't seem like a good idea.

I brought my 5 bed cushions home and one-by-one pulled the staples and removed the covers. I used my electric (meat) carving knife and shaved off about an inch of the original (concrete) foam rubber. It started out easy but if got to be a bit of a fussy job. If I had to do it again I would have stripped it all off and replaced it with a slab of 1-1/2" regular foam. Anyway, once I got it shaved down, then I applied a topper of 1-1/2" memory foam. Used spray adhesive. Then I re-covered the cushions with the original cushions. The "new" v-berth looks just like the old v-berth and is much more comfortable.

I had debated using an entire 3" thick slab of memory foam but I experimented with a 3" sample and it compresses completely down to the plywood. Not good. And, just an opinion, I think as you sink down into the foam it would get too warm. Not the best idea for summertime boating.

One other thing. The princess demands sheets, especially a bottom sheet, instead of the thin fleece zip-up sleeping bags. Fitted sheets seemed expensive and struggling up in the v-berth area tucking the sheets in all around just never seemed to work. So I got some of those plastic snap buckles and attached them to the perimeter of the v-berth cushions on short straps. When installed on the boat, they just peek out from under the bolsters. Then the bottom sheet was cut down to size and I sewed the matching buckle pieces to the sheet with a short bit of strapping. These pieces are adjustable so the sheet can be adjusted taught. It worked great on the family room floor. First tryout on the boat is next weekend.

We went with ‘the tufted topper’. Look it up.
Very comfortable, easy directions and good communication by the company-and they can also make you a fitted sheet!

Thanks for all the great tips: Decided on a KING memory gel-foam topper ($50). The King is necessary due to the odd (almost square 76x76") max.measurements of the R27 V-berth. Got the 1.5" since the 2-3" thickness seemed a bit heavy -& bulky to store. We could always go that route though if a 1.5" wouldn't help.
Laid the topper on a sheet on the dock, placed the cushions on it & outlined with marker. Then brought the topper home and it was easy to cut-to-fit with a razor knife in 15 mins.
Used a fitted queen bottom sheet (excess underside held tight w/sheet-garters). It's PERFECT & at least reasonably comfy -even for us "older" sailors with neck/back "issues".
