Vessel documentation

This is interesting. Not more than a month ago I applied for documentation on my boat. I received a letter yesterday informing me that it shall serve as my temporary document certificate and that I must carry it in my boat. My permanent certificate should arrive shortly.
This is quite contrary from what I have been reading. I have been told it could take months.
The letter gave little detail so my question is do I apply the number inside the vessel as required or wait until the permanent certificate arrives.
At this time I am registered in RI so I am legal anyway.

Found this online info from USCG about TCOD:

The relevant paragraph states:
"While it is in effect, the recreational vessel subject to this TCOD shall be deemed to be a
documented vessel of the United States, subject to all of the rights and responsibilities
applicable by law to documented vessels and to CODs."

So according to this, you can go ahead and apply your numbers.

We recently applied to renew our documentation and received the same letter. I verified that the numbers on the temp are the same as what is on the original. That being said, I would apply the numbers.

I'm curious how long it took to get your letter. We purchased our boat last November and still have not received anything from the USCG. The lender was supposed to take care of it. I was told we can't register it with the state of Florida without the number provided by the USCG.

Go to this URL and search for the name you put on the documentation papers. My number was issued within about 2 weeks after filing.

Since the letter serves as documentation, with all rights etc. I would hold off with the permanent marking of the boat in case of a problem that results in a number change. After all the permanent marking is not supposed to be removable.

Those were my thoughts. I figure since I am registered with the state and have the numbers displayed appropriately then having the temporary documentation would be superfluous at this time and I would wait until I received my permanent certificate before I started etching numbers into the boat that for some reason may be changed.
It seems funny that they can go through the trouble of issuing a temporary document and not just issue the permanent one. Oh, I forgot, government and efficiency cannot coincide! :lol:

Mike, a side issue is that you have been officially notified that it is now a documented vessel with registration number xxxxxx.
If you get stopped and you have not marked the vessel in accordance with the law is there a legal issue with that?

Now in the real world with the RI registration still plastered on the boat the topic will not come up if you do not bring it up - so, I am probably just counting angels on the head of a pin here - just remember the war slogan "Loose Lips Sink Ships" :mrgreen:

If I am reading the regulations correctly, once you have your letter or certificate and have affixed the permanent number you must remove your state numbers, leaving only the state registration decal in place. Am I correct?
