Finally, I decided to connect my Garmin 54x GPS to my VHF radio. Got both manuals, read them. Seemed simple enough, until I looked at the wiring behind the helm on my boat. It looked like some of the spider webs that are on the outside of the boat.

I really hate to tear everything out to trace wires and figure out what's going on. 🙁 Does anyone know where the blue wire from the VHF that is attached to a yellow wire that runs up under the overhead "fuzzy" cover, terminate? That blue wire should (?) be used to connect the GPS to the VHF. So, what's the story with the yellow wire?

Thanks

Hi Gene,

I had some problems with my Garmin 540s and Horizon VHF when I took delivery of my boat. My dealer was some 300 miles away, so I tackled this myself. Each data wire from the radio was connected to a different data channel on the GPS. If I remember correctly, my boat had mix-matched wires attached at the radio end over top of the fuzzy stuff to make a wire harness long enough to route over the ceiling, down the pole, and under the floor. I do not remember what color they were though. I think the Horizon wire harness was pretty short and I was able to pull just enough wire back to the radio from behind the wood panel in the center to see and replace the connectors (which were too big for the wire size). I did not have to remove the carpet lined middle part.

I can go retrace my wires tomorrow evening if you need me too. Let me know.

Good luck,
Bri

Thanks Bri,

No need for you to go trace your wiring. We've had heat in the 90's from sometime before we left for Nova Scotia on vacation in June. I was trying to avoid the sweatbox cabin for an extended period looking for wires. Have a forecast in the 80's coming late in the week, so I'll run back over to the boat. It's just across the lake from my house. I live next to my sailing club and they won't let me keep my tug at the docks here.

It's probably better for me to figure out how Ranger wired things. Might save time in the future.

Those are hugh connectors! 😱
