Hello,

I'm looking to add some battery monitoring to my boat. I had been eyeing the Victron BMV-712 but was not too keen on adding another display (much less cutting a hole to mount it) and came across their Smart Shunt: https://www.victronenergy.com/battery-m ... -nav-image

Sounds like it works just like the BMV-712 but you use bluetooth and the app on your phone as the display for information rather than running wire and mounting one. Has anyone installed one of these?

Thanks!

Yes, I have installed one in my R31. So far it works great. It does seems that when I am at the helm it might be close to the limit of its bluetooth range. If I step back a few steps it seems to connect very quickly.

Other then that it seems to work great. It is mounted in the cockpit locker next to the house battery bank.

That's good to hear. Thanks. And with my shorter R-25 I might not even run into the bluetooth range issue 😉

I have the 712 smart controller installed. The display is mounted in the same hole where the Morningstar display was. Bluetooth range is throughout the boat... R29,

Has anybody compared the Balmar SG-200 vs. the Victron? I’ve been led to believe the Balmar is a better option if you aren’t interested in fiddling with the thing. I’m also looking at this upgrade.

My local battery shop recommended the Balmar, which I have installed. It also has a Bluetooth option, which has been nice to have this past week when I've had the boat in the driveway with no shore power connected, only solar. It is working great, but of course, I don't have anything to compare it to.

I put one of these on my thruster battery. Works great. I use Bluetooth to my iPad to monitor. https://www.amazon.com/QUICKLYNKS-Batte ... 340&sr=8-1

I also installed a Victron Smartsolar controller on the house batteries which can be monitored via Bluetooth as well.

Only battery I need to look at on the Garmin is the stating battery.

i love the software and bluetooth of the victron products. I would definitely go in that direction again. these guys are good at writing software and keeping products up to date. not all traditional manufacturers have made the switch to software development as well.

Range issue? I can check the status of my batteries from my couch, with my R-23 sitting about 50 feet away on the other side of the garage.
