I have a 2013 Ranger 27 with the Volvo 200.
At anchor, engine not running, get 105-110volts from the inverter.
With the engine running get only 80-85 volts .
Is this typical. Does it indicate some problem somewhere.
A boat yard mechanic said the Volvo engine pulls too much power ????

How old are your batteries? I'd check the voltage on the batteries (house bank) under each of your scenarios and see if the voltage drops below the minimum required for your inverter to produce the correct voltage.

Was the inverter under load? (Microwave or something else turned on). It is normal for the inverter to only show 80 to 85 volts with no load.

do not understand difference with engine on or off.
Inverter normally will read low unless you have a true RMS meter.
I bought this a couple of years ago, also does AC and DC clamp on current.

available on Amazon for almost twice price.

The explanation from the Volvo mechanic does not make sense to me. The inverter is for a 110V system and the engine works on a 12V system and initially draws the current from the engine battery. When starting the ACR's will isolate the engine battery from the system. Once started the alternator will put out enough power to keep the engine running and charge the batteries. Depending on your inverter and what modes it may have is why you may be getting the variable voltage readings. On my ProMariner Combi there is a standby mode and an always on mode. In standby the inverter will show a low voltage and hunts for a draw. Once there is a draw for a very short period of time the inverter will liven up and provide full power. Is it possible that while on the hook you are using power from your inverter and that is why you are seeing 110V? While the engine is running is there anything drawing power? If not then you would get the low reading.

I agree with Curt. When the engine is running in may R-27 D-3, the voltage reads 80-85 when no load is being drawn. If you run the microwave or other large load, the voltage jumps up to 100-110.
