Volvo Check EVC System error

I have a 2019 R31 CB with a D4 300 Volvo and when I start the engine I receive an error;

Check EVC System
Gear automatically set to neutral.
Engine power is reduced

Contact a Volvo Penta workshop.

Engine lost communication with helm.

Can anyone shed light on what might be causing this error? Looking on line it appears I may have a connection problem?

I'd do a couple of things:

1) turn everything off, disconnect shore power, and turn all of your battery switches off. Wait 60 seconds, turn the battery switches back on.

2) double check all of the connections on your binnacles and makes sure they are secure.

If still not working, maybe others have some advice or contact your mechanic...

Hi Keith,

Among other things, make sure that your engine battery is in good order. A low voltage situation can cause the "Engine lost communication with helm" error message that you received, even when you still have enough power to start the engine. Starting the engine will cause a large draw on the start battery. If this battery also has insufficient voltage, starting the engine will draw down the voltage enough to where proper communication between components cannot be maintained. This will result in a communication error and generate the error code. Hope this helps.

I'm currently dealing with the same issue. I have found that an 8 pin electrical connector ( in my case) seems to be the problem. I push the ends together, wiggle it and it starts and runs fine - for awhile. I've pulled the connector apart, sprayed corrosion X in and it doesn't seem to fix it for a long time. Currently dealing with RT Volvo expert to diagnose.

Had this issue this morning. After reading Ralf’s message I turned the parallel switch and the engine fired up normally. Turned the parallel switch off once the engine is running. Am I ok to go to my next destination? Any chance the engine will stop mid-route?
