Just a heads up for all owners of a boat with the Volvo D3.

On my boat I found the plastic engine cover/casing was rubbing and chafing against one of the coolant hoses. I found it before it caused a serious problem but wanted to let others know to inspect this area for chafing. It is in the port aft top corner of the engine. I cut out some of the plastic cover to solve this. Here is a picture after completed. You can see the chafing damage to the hose and where I cut out the cover in the picture.

Hi Curt, thanks for this heads-up. I will inspect the cover and adjacent hoses on my D3 (2013 R27) and post my findings.

I removed the plastic cowling from the top of the D3 engine and found no chafing on my hoses.

However, it is worth re-posting this as others may want to inspect their own. You can see from the picture included with Red Raven's posting below that there is some risk to chafing that could compromise the heater hose.

Curt, thanks again for the heads-up!

Ok,
This is a standard problem with most mass produced vehicles. We have had two Ranger Tugs an R25SC and an R29S. I did not recognize this until I had a brake failure on our Cummings Diesel Dodge Ram from a chafed brake line. Every vehicle is built to tolerances. At times these tolerances add up to interferences. Most times these are found during quality control inspections, if this is a common problem. With that said. On our first Tug I did what I will call a touchy feely inspection. Just crawl around and feel and touch. I found one intrusion and on our second I found two. No big deal a tie rap here a tie rap there and problems were avoided.

The positive beyond avoiding unforeseen problems is that you get to know your boat intimately and when a concern arises you know where to start looking.
