Wondering if anyone here has had their cooling system serviced? Heat exchanger has been showing some corrosion and service technicians are recommending replacing quite a few parts...

What might be estimated cost to get this done? Thanks!

That is an open question with many different numbers $$$. The answer should be based on the technicians inspection of the cooling system. What if any leaks are present? Is the corrosion present at the split lines of the end caps or after cooler and heat exchanger. Have you noticed increased running temperatures indicating a buildup of marine growth and salt deposits in the cooler? If the technician is proposing removing the exchanger, oil cooler and after cooler disassembling cleaning ,pressure checking and resealing the all the components this is a labor intensive job + parts the cost could be expensive. I would ask the technician to give you an estimate of what he is intending to do. He knows what the labor rate is to remove, clean, inspect, reassemble and install. The only variable will be if issues of failed components are found during the inspection.

How many hours and what has the maintenance program been for flushing and cleaning the system in the past? I have heard from Volvo technicians that the end caps have had corrosion issues at the split lines causing leakage. The removal inspection and replacement of the seals normally takes care of the issue.

The D4 and D6 have are similar designs basically D6 has 2 extra cylinders. There was a post this year of a C28 owner that had a split line leak that took out his starter motor and had the components removed cleaned, pressure checked and resealed. He may be able to give you a general cost of Labor.

I think Brian is referring to my issue. You definitely need a quote with specifics. Brian is right in that if you have a leak, it can kill your starter, it happened to me.

You can verify prices for parts online. Here's one place: http://www.volvopentastore.com/

There are many others. Shop labor rates vary, but it should be in your quote.

I do think its important to get an experienced tech if you can. There is a certain order for parts to come off the engine, and for parts to go back on. You can waste a lot of time if the tech is not familiar with the procedure. Very important to check for leaks after job is done.
