My generator has an engine anode so I am wondering if the Volvo Penta D4-300 has them also? If so where might they be located?

Hello Franco,

Depending on the year if your boat. Typically if your boat is 5-6 years old it won’t have engine anodes.

Thank you,

Kevin, do the newer D4-300’s have anodes? I was told that the engine in my R31, built in late 2018 as a 2019 model, does not have anodes, and I haven’t been able to identify any. But I’d like to make sure I’m not missing a maintenance item. How can I do that? Thanks!

I have a R29, 2019 model year, commissioned in August 2018. Same engine as yours.

Good Afternoon:

The following is from the Volvo Penta Service and Maintenance D4, D6 Manual:

"Anodes are located on the heat exchanger and the charge air cooler end walls. Replace anodes when 50% has been consumed. On newer engines the end walls are plastic. These are without anodes."

Hello,

The Volvo D4 and D6's originally had two engine anodes installed (one on the heat exchanger and one on the charge air cooler). Volvo removed the anode from the heat exchanger, but kept the anode installed in the charge air cooler. Shortly afterwards the anode from the charge air cooler was removed. This all took place between our 2015 and 2016 model year boats, however it's best to check the engine on your boat to verify which anodes, if any, you have onboard. Please feel free to shoot me an email with any questions.

Thank you,

-Tim

I've searched pretty thoroughly and found no anodes on my D4 300 hp.
The build was 01/11/2016. This seems consistent with the change over date.

Without the anodes, is the cooling system (raw water side) more prone to corrosion?

Every marine engine I've ever had before has had a sacrificial anode on the heat exchanger; surprised Volvo got rid of them (or are they bonded to something else that acts as sacrificial protection)?
