Does anyone have experience with the Volvo Extended Warranty. Long and short of situation is that I have an extended warranty, I had to replace the reverse gear on my D3 , two of the plates were broken. The Volvo dealer told the RT Dealer that Transmissions are not covered under the extended Warranty. The reverse gear was and is Volvo labeled gear.

Any experience you can share. Is appreciated.

I have the warranty printout for our 2017 RT25SC and it clearly shows both the engine and gearbox. It expired last November, 5 years after we took delivery. I'm not sure whether a 2016 boat wouldn't also have expired.

If you have the 5 year extended warranty and the commissioning date of your power plant is within the 5 years and the failure was not do to an impact or recommended servicing issue. It must be under 1000 hours, the reverse gear should be covered. Call Volvo customer service and also send an email. They will send you the information as to what is covered and what coverage you have left based on the serial number of your D3.

Brian,

Thanks for the response. The service dealer says that the reverse gear is not covered. They. Have provided a couple of reasons and offered that the plates don just crack? They the dealer , are dug in. I called an 800 number I found for Volvo Penta customer service. It is just a recording directing you to the volvo penta website. Do you by any chance have a number where an actual human being will answer. Please pm me if you do.

Bob,

Sorry about your reverse gear problem. I assume the plates that were broken are the clutch plates. If so that seems to be a common problem with this drive a ZF45A modified for the D3 by Volvo. The ZF dealer that obtained a new drive for me thinks that the Volvo torsional interface bolted to the engine flywheel may be our problem. I am beginning to think so also with all the drive failures reported on this web site. Other engine manufactures have had similar problems with this drive and found out that their torsional interface was insufficient. I tried to address that with Volvo and they indicated the interface was adequate and directed me to ZF for help. However if you read the warranty on the ZF drive it is the engine manufacturer’s responsibility to provide a proper interface.

I did not have a warranty so I cannot help you with that, however if yours is not going to be covered by Volvo, I would find a ZF dealer and purchase a ZF45A for under $2K and have them take the Volvo shift block on the gear that failed and replace the manual shift block in the new ZF. You now have VP gear compatible with your D3. Also, since you had parts break in the gear, some may have gotten into the oil cooler. Since the VP oil cooler is not cleanable I would purchase a new oil cooler. If you go with Volvo it is $450 or another manufacturer less than half that.

Good luck with the repair and $ from Volvo.

Bob, I would assume you are the original owner of the boat. If so call or email the Fluid Motion customer service. I would Email Andrew. He has always been very responsive to answering questions. He may be able to get you a name and email address to a Volvo Representative that can answer your warranty questions.

I have this contact from 2020.

Dick and Brian,

Thanks for the responses. The GOOD NEWS is that the team at WINTER ISLAND YACHT YARD repaired Muirgen and we went for a cruise yesterday with reverse working great.

What I learned is the following

Volvo have and extended warranty for transmissions however it is very narrow covering the housing casting against cracking. So the warranty did not apply.

I will admit that I had happy ears ( eyes in this case ) when i heard extended warranty i referred to the additional purchase “extended warranty” material that the original owner provided with the boat. In the process I learned he did not purchase the extended warranty ( as I mistakenly believed maybe hoped) and the boat was under the Volvo standard warranty which includes an extension for Major Components and specifically calls out what is and is not covered explicitly, my issue was not covered.

I had they team at WIYY do some other things to the boat while she was on the hard. All is well.

Thanks for you willingness to help and share.

Regards,
Bob Flaherty
