Wonder if anyone on this site has an opinion on this - I have moved on from my Cutwater 28 to a new Norwegian boat with a Volvo D4 300 diesel just like the Ranger 29s etc. Wondering if it is worth paying an extra $3200 for the extended warranty that pushes out the Volvo warranty from 2 to 5 years. Never had a warranty issue with my Cutwater diesel, I know they do happen sometimes. Any thoughts?

My general rule on insurance or purchasing a warranty is buy one if you can't afford the loss. Granted, with the warranty chances are you won't be lead down the garden path with an unnecessary repair since it is on their ticket. So roll the dice one way or the other and hope for the best. The auto industry has really increased their warranty protection over the years . I think mainly because they have greatly improved their quality control programs. Hence if a manufacturer offers a pretty good warranty chances are it won't be needed except for those odd circumstances. For them it is all about a calculated number based on what they charge and what it may cost them over time.

Note that the warranty is based on 200 hours per year or 1000 hours vs 5 years. For a looper that means maybe 2 years. Our only warranty claims were a faulty primary fuel filter and a transmission cooler. Was it worth it? Yes, for peace of mind. Did it pay off financially? No.
