Hi Tugnuts,
We just had to have our turbocharger on our D4-300 replaced at just under 650 engine hours; an exhaust fan blade broke when I was taking it up to WOT after about four hours of slow cruising.
Two reputable Volvo Penta shops said the job should take about 4-5 hours. I then scheduled the work. The shop called half way through the first day and said that they would have to remove the exhaust manifold to get the turbo off. This added over 10 hours of work. The internet, and the other service provider I checked with, said that the exhaust manifold doesn't need to be removed to replace the turbocharger assembly.
For those of you who have had to replace your turbocharger, did your exhaust manifold have to be removed? (Maybe it's unique to Ranger Tug and Cutwater configurations, though the turbo area seems to have decent working room??)
