Subject: Volvo Penta D4-300HP engine service in Seattle area

For those with this Volvo engine and located in the Seattle PNW area, who do you use for the engine servicing tasks ?

When I searched for a Volvo servicing shop on the Volvo web site I came up with

Coastal Marine Engine

Thanks... 🙂

Hi Barry,

Pacific Power Group has a Kent facilities and has a close relationship to Fluid Motion. They come to the Rendezvous, do the seminars there, and know the Volvo Penta engines well. They will come to your boat whether it is on the water or land. I have only had them out only for a minor warranty item as I do my own service but they seem like a great knowledgeable group. I order Volvo parts through them if I can’t get them from Fluid Motion.

I used pacific power.. They werent the cheapest around but very competent. they usually service those big engines on the megayachts and dont make much money on our small volvo's but will come out and service. they charge for travel time.
I was happy with the service.

I was not happy with costal marine seattle who were just never responsive to inquiries.

Now I get my engine serviced up north at La conner maritime.

might be worth asking the new South lake union cutwater dealer who they have services done by

So you cruise up to La Conner for your service ????

A neighbor (C28 boat) adjacent to my slip at the Port of Edmonds uses an ex-RT employee who serviced the Volvo engines for RT. My neighbor has a good experience with this servicing person, and I observed him one day doing the servicing and he seemed very knowledgeable.

I shall do my own oil changes as that's one of the easiest DIY tasks and suspect not much different from doing this on my past R-25 (Classic) as I have all the tools for doing this. Just have to properly dispose of the old oil. From my experience with diesels over the years, the oil changes are quite likely the best thing to keep on top of.

my boat is kept in La conner for the winter so its easy to get the service done up there. its kept in Seattle for the summer and I had it serviced down there in the summer before.

if you have the time, tools and flexability the service is very doable. as I bought a used boat the first service was with pacific power and we went through the diagnostics together on the laptop. something that a self service wouldnt cover.

for me the added value of a profressional doing the service is noticing things ahead of time and not just what is called for in the service book. that and avoiding having to change the impeller mself 🙂

Gavin:

I agree on the 'look ahead' by an onsite service technician for potential issues needing attention before they get worse.

The oil change is easy, takes about a full hour to exchange the oil and I can buy the oil myself. This saves a good one hour of the service person's time which saves me on the labor charge. The impeller replacement on the D4 is also a very easy task so will do that myself.

Yes, the computer diagnostic process is best left to the professionals as they have the proper devices for doing this and hopefully can interpret the results correctly and of course that the diagnostic testing does not give any false-positives.

I have had Coastal Marine service my engine the past two years and was very happy with their service.I found them helpful and knowledgeable.
