Today I went to VOLVO Penta’s web sight in search of something and when I typed my engine serial number in a note came up that the engine had a recall. I was directed to contact my local certified dealer, which I did. I left my info for them to check it out and report back to me. In the mean time I wanted to alert others with a Volvo Penta to check there sight out for any recall you may have. Lastly does anyone know of a recall or had one done recently on your Volvo Penta that you could share with us?

Jim

Hi Jim, Thanks for the heads up. I also have a D4 in our 31. I just went to the Volvo Website and put in my serial # as well. It says something to do with Alternator harness. The Recall campaign that came up on our engine is R0031. did you have the same campaign number?

John

There was no number that came up when I did this. It will be interesting to see if mine is the same recall.

Jim

I have a D4 -260 from 2012. there is no recall on my serial.

Our Volvo D4 300 (2014 R31CB) also has the alternator harness campaign. You can check the connection yourself and abate any issue, but this will not make the entry on the Volvo website.

I just check on my 2014 D4-300 and it also has the recall on the Alternator harness "Recall Campaign. R0031, D4, D6. Alternator harness inspect"

So is there anything specifically we should check beside the general condition of the connector / pins/wire?

Jim, our boat is the same vintage as yours. I just checked and it is also subject to a recall campaign regarding the alternator harness. When I look at my alternator, it simply has wires in a wire loom connected to the lugs, plus a female 2-prong connecting plug painted green (like everything else) that looks like it has never had anything plugged into it. Does that match other people’s observations? Does anyone know what the issue is here that led to the recall?

The topic was briefly mentioned at our 2018 Pocket Yacht Rendezvous. If I recall correctly, it had to do with the position of the wire that was connected to the alternator. (Possible overheat/fire issue?) I wish Volvo would provide a description of the exact issue on their campaigns. Perhaps the factory guys can shed some light on this topic.

Hello everyone,

The Volvo D4 alternator campaign is concerning the positive (Red) wire connected to the alternator. The wire on some D4 engines was connected in such a way that the wire is too close to the alternator itself, which could potentially cause chaffing. The fix for this campaign is to simply unbolt the wire and turn it around, providing more space between the cable and the alternator. If looking to inspect this wire yourself, there is a black plastic cover that will need to be removed by unscrewing the single bolt holding it in place. You can then visually inspect the wire and connection. Once we received notice of the campaign we have been inspecting every D4 that comes through the factory, and reporting our findings to Volvo so they can remove the campaign from those engines. This is why some will experience the campaign, and other's will not. The serial number range for engines affected is: A191179 to A957200. If your engine has been recently into a certified Volvo Penta service center they should have inspected this at no charge. For all others, you'll want to go to volvopenta.com to locate the nearest service center.

I will say that out of the 90-100 engines I've personally inspected, there has not been one that needed anything more than an inspection. Please feel free to reach out directly to my email listed below with any additional questions.

Thanks Tim! I figured you would be the one who could get us all up to date.
