strange experience this weekend.

went over to bainbridge from Seattle. engine started no problem (Volvo D4 260) ran up to WOT over to bainbridge to clear out the cobwebs once warm.

it was a hot day

docked and had dinner. came back to boat. engine temp gauge had dropped to about 145 whilst we were at dinner. started the engine. it caught, ran for about 4 seconds and stalled. felt like fuel starvation.

wouldnt restart on a quick crank of the engine

waited a minute and had a look around the engine bay; no obvious issues. (plenty of fuel etc, no blockages)

attempted to restart, engine cranked longer than usual and then caught and ran fine including the trip back

it kinda feels like there was a vapor lock in the fuel supply perhaps caused by the warm weather? that needed the fuel pump some more time to clear.

anybody else ran into this issue or has recommendations?

Did you stay at WOT all the way to Bainbridge? I don't remember where I heard it, but someone told me you should run at idle speed for at least 15 minutes before shutting down the engine.

Hello Cutwater 28GG
I suspect that this problem is related to a Volvo Tech bulletin. I was experiencing the same issue with our D4-300 R31. Would run fine and then after anchoring out for a couple of hours, the engine would start and stall. However if completely cooled off, it starts and runs normally. The tech bulletin outlines a check valve needed in a part downstream of the high pressure fuel pump and is under warranty. Bulletin October 2015 Group 23-4 Number 15 Version 4. Hope this helps....Lance

Good info guys!

The engine had at least a 15 min cool down on the slow motor up the channel into bainbridge marina and docking
