WARNING When Towing a R-31

I'm going to stick a warning about this to the back of my Boat US card

We have a 2016 R-27 with the D3-220 Volvo.
This is valuable info and I had never given it a thought about closing the sea cock if I needed a tow.
Knock wood I have not need a tow.

How,would running the TV draw down the engine battery?

I don’t know. I had an ABYC certified electrician check my boat and he concluded that the Starter battery was shot and we are replacing it. He recommended in the future to switch the Kisea ABSO Inverter off after anchoring to minimize the draw on the house batteries.

So, two different issues, then? But yes, always turn the inverter off when not in use. This is covered in the Ranger Tugs power management webinar on YouTube, along with a lot of other useful info.

After checking all the batteries, my ABYC Certified electrician found that all the Chinese batteries were shot and needed to be replaced.

So we are installing NORTHSTAR batteries made in the USA. As they say, you can have cheap or good…but not cheap and good!

Other than the hyper-expensive FireFly Oasis Group 31 battery, no flooded or AGM battery, regardless where built, will give very many years of service if it is discharged below 12.4 bolts (75%) on a regular basis.
I’d strongly encourage everyone who hasn’t to see the Ranger Tug Power Management video referenced above. Good quality AGM and flooded cells deep cycle batteries should last 5-6 years before needing replacement. We just changed out our house flooded batteries after 6 years of use only as a preventative maintenance issue. The engine and thruster/windlass flooded batteries were replaced after 5 years - also as a preventative maintenance task.
That said, both my old batteries and the new ones were made in North America.
As they say, “Most batteries don’t die, they are murdered.”

PS: I was reminded that deep cycle lithium batteries will also go way, way below 75% discharge without long term damage. Like the Firefly Oasis, lithium batteries are pricey.
