I was replacing the zincs on my Yanmar 6BY-260 today. The lower zinc was gone as expected. Replaced with a new zinc. When I went to remove the upper zinc, the brass nut backed out but it looks like the zinc is still lodged in the heat exchanger. So I re-installed the same nut because I didn't want to push the old zinc into the heat exchanger and have it rattle around in there. I figure I will check on it in another month and see what's there. Am I wrong?

Bob,

When I recently replaced our zincs, we had a similar experience. However, I fished the old zinc out with a small “grab tool”. The weird thing was the zinc was mushy. Not sure what that was all about, but I’m glad I got it out and replaced. My thought is if its not connected to the nut, it may “travel”.

I'll have another look at it. It looked like it had just separated from the stud that screws into the nut cap. I may be wrong and find that it's mushy and I can clean it out. Otherwise, it will do its job where it is and I'll inspect in another month.
