I'm bottom painting my 2014 R31 CB and have removed the outboard screws holding the cover to the main engine water intake.

I want to clean and paint it to prevent barnacle growth.

Even with the screws removed, It will not budge.

Anyone out there have an idea how to remove that part? I do not want to force it.

Some thru hull fittings are also screwed from the engine compartment. Not knowing I’d suggest making contact with RT and or try n google the fitting brand to look for instructions.

Mr. Happy, If you are talking about the Thru-Hull fitting and Hull-Strainer! You might want to get on the web and see how they attach to the hull. You might be creating a bigger job than you want. The thru-hull/hull-strainer is removed by the nut on the inside of the hull and after removal will need to be resealed. Most boat yards will tape off for bottom painting and clean with a wire brush.
Good luck. Bob

Mister Happy....I like it.....possibly my new nickname.

Then again, a good friend used to refer to his.....ahem..."member"...as Mister Happy, so maybe not.

Sounds appropriate for a forum thus named. To quote a wiser man than I, "That's all I have to say about that."

Hello,

The thru-hull has a threaded pipe that is attached to the scupper itself and the screws on bottom hold it in place. You would need to remove the ball valve and fittings in order to remove the scupper fully. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Leave well enough alone. You can clean it pretty well without removal. If you are worried about internal barnacle build up yo are better off removing the elbow above and put in a "T" with a plug on top. You can then remove the plug to clean out the pipe.

This is a critical fitting and unless seriously damaged is best left installed so you don't end up sinking the boat from an improper or bad luck re-install. Knotflying's solution above the hull is great. To clean my engine cooling intake fixture below the hull this spring I did the following:

1. Went to West Marine and took pictures of a new one so I would have a reference to its construction while I cleaned it.
2. Wire brushed the external ribs of the screen and the spaces in between.
3. Use a flashlight and a couple of small size screw drivers and wiggle jiggle them into the fitting thru the length of each rib. Be careful to not get debris in your eyes as it falls through. The barnacles show up pretty clearly as white. Be sure to remove not just the large shell but also the oval base where they attach to the surface.
4. Use a SS dental pick with a squiggly end to get into the difficult corners and spaces that the screw drivers can't reach.
5. Duc(t/k) tape closed the outside of the fixture.
6. Remove the sea strainer cover and pour in Barnacle Buster.
7. Let it sit for an hour or two and then drain, flush and replace the strainer cover.
