Water makers

Just FYI;
I have had a Katadyn 160 watermaker (no longer in production) on my sailboat for 12 years. Original membrane, still makes very near it’s spec production of 7.8 gpm. Simple procedure to pickle it when unused for two weeks. We have stored the boat for over a year during unusual circumstances with no detriment to the watermaker. Follow prescribed maintenance, and watermakers are amazingly reliable.

We went to the Bahamas for a week and did fine conserving water. We started with a full tank, several gallon jugs and a blue seven gallon jug (from West Marine). Never had to take on any and came home with extra. Now that was only a week. I think if we plan to go for longer remote cruises, the first thing I would do is plumb in a throw valve to go to an alternative sea water flush for the head. When cruising locally, back to fresh water.

We also do an initial wash of dishes in seawater, then rinse in fresh. This is a little trick we learned when we were instructors in Outwards Bound’s sea program.
