Hello and new to the world of Ranger Tugs. We bought a used 09 25 with the Cummins 2.0 150hp. 75 miles into our first trip and the water pump pully broke. It's made of some kind of composite material. The pully is on national backorder. Has anyone had this problem and found one made of metal. Or bought all of the pully's made and might want to sell one. Upon inspection you can see fatigue in the pully where it was damaged during water pump rebuild at some point. Did take water pump apart and rebuilt it. I NEED A PULLY! And finally a Sea Dory pulled us in from Hines Bank to John Wayne Marina. Outboards are looking mighty good again.

Thanks Les

Les, I feel your pain! Parts prices and parts availability continue to be a challenge on our Yanmar 4by2 2009 RT-25. It’s been my understanding that it’s even more challenging for those with the Cummins-Mercury engine. I’ve stocked up on commonly needed power train parts and consumables every time I find them available and respectfully suggest you do the same.
I’d use any same sized pully regardless of the material it’s made of given the situation. Perhaps even going to a machine shop with the old pully and see what could be fabricated for you from raw metal stock....
Good luck!

Try Performance Products Technologies PPT located in Stillwater Oklahoma tel:1-405-533-3812. They sell Mercruiser parts, and stock many. Not knowing your serial number I picked a random and found #898101684 in stock. I'm not sure if this matches your pulley. Give them a call.

Actually I have two pully's on order. One from PPT and one from another company. They are both on backorder. Crazy situation. I will try NAPA and see if they have a serpintene pully that would work. Pully has to be close in diameter or engine cooling could be compromised.

Well, I am in the same boat, literally, with my 2009 Ranger 25. The pulley partially disintegrated, damaged the belt and caused the water pump to leak. I have ordered all the pump parts through Cummins in Sumner, WA, and they will be delivered around 7/27...BUT I have encountered what many others have apparently discovered: the pulley is not available and is BACKORDERED! I have been told by several Ranger-related sources as well as by independent suppliers, including Performance Products Technology, that the part is currently not available.

Has anyone found a solution or alternate source for the pulley? It sounds like this is not a newly developed issue with Ranger/Cummins. I have received two availability dates of 7/26 and 8/2, so maybe the backorder issue is being remedied, but, in the event it isn't, does anyone have alternative sources I might pursue? Given that this appears to be a fairly long-standing problem, I am surprised that Ranger and/or Cummins hasn't come up with a solution by now.

Thanks, Charlie

Not sure why Ranger or Cummins either one would feel compelled to deal with this issue. Ranger put the engines in a few of there boats ten years ago. At what point does it stop being their problem? They're not an auto maker that produces hundreds of thousands of a given model.

Similar issue with Cummins. Why would they be concerned about problems with a Mercruiser engine? Sure they made a few bucks licensing their name to Merc for a while but it's not their engine. If I walk into the local Cummins shop and ask them for a part they say that if I have the Mercruiser part no. they can order it for me at Mercruiser's exorbitant price plus tag on a markup. Or I can drive down the street and order it at the Mercruiser dealer and pay the standard exorbitant price with no additional fee. Sort of an IQ test.

Now asking that question about Mercruiser is a legit gripe. Then again maybe they resolved the issue by going with Jabsco or some other solution for a raw water pump on the newer engines.

Charlie, I ordered three pullies and received all of them. Our boat is back up and running. The pullies were manufactured in France. They must be outsourced there by Mercruiser. So bottom line is I would sell you one of them if you still need one.

I found a place on Ebay that had a major rebuild pump kit. Worked out fine.

Glad you got it worked out, Les. It looks like they use a different pump on the newer engines. I'm about due for an overhaul on the pump so may convert it if the newer pump has a splined shaft. I always fight that woodruff key when changing the impeller.

Yes it is nice to be up and running. I fought the location of the pump more than anything. I'm having my arms stretched out another 10 inches, that should solve the problem. Ant then my arms and fingers will be thinner?

I hope I am not too far out of line, but this is the closest thread I found on the Merc/Cummins water pump.
Anyway, whilst buying parts yesterday for a 09 Merc/Cummins EI 150 with what I believe is a Sherwood water pump, (I always buy after service for the following year) I was quoted $238.00 for the impellor ONLY.. Just for the part, not installed.
My question is do any of the Merc/Cummins owners have a source and/or experience with another source for this part? Perhaps something that is only mildly excessive in cost, even by marine standards. Thank you.

For those of us with the Merc/Cummins QSD 2.0 150 engine, I would like to answer my own question:
I believe most of these engines have the Sherwood raw water pump. After much research I have found the following information on our sea water pump impellers:
* Cummins QSD 2.0 150 EI water pump info
The impeller is Sherwood part # 10615 or Sherwood 10615A. 10615 K is a kit, includes gasket(s), not used, and O-ring.
approximately 1 5/8” wide and 2 5/8” diameter. Shaft is keyed. Hub is aluminum. Impeller number is cast in the
rubber right at the edge of the hub on the side, and should be legible on a used impeller. COST IS $30 to $40. Find on
Amazon, Pumps Direct, E Bay and other sites. There are some cheaper, but the source is questionable or used parts.
Mercruiser part # 47-879312025 is priced at $130.00 plus. It will probably will be the Sherwood impeller (see above}
in the box. The last one I bought from Mercruiser was this Sherwood impellor in a Mercruiser box
Based on my experience, I would change this every 200 hours. The one that was in the boat after purchase
was maybe 4 to 5 years old. May have been run dry. Found chunks out of the impeller blades (recovered from
the intercooler).
I just changed one of these with 146 hours on it and it showed minimal wear, some vane set, no cracks or missing
pieces. Ran it on the bench and it worked fine. It was NEVER run dry.
NOTE: I rotated it on the bench with the pump cover plate off to confirm that the vanes on the impeller will actually clock correctly if they are installed formed in the "wrong " direction, and they reset to the correct clock every time. Put a zip tie on the vanes and compress to get the impeller started on the shaft, then cut the zip tie and push impeller in to the pump housing. It will not go all the way in if the key comes out of the shaft. Also, if you put the pulley mounting hub (Forward end of shaft) in a vise and let the pump body rotate freely, you will not shock or strain the mechanical seal in the pump when loading the new impeller.
P.S. If you haven't cut the cabin sole back about 1 3/4" to gain clearance in front of the engine, do it first. What a great idea that I got off this site.
