In my 2019 R23, my Garmin doesn't show water temperature. Is there a setting I'm missing or a sensor that is optional or malfunctioning?

I believe the R23 uses an in-hull transducer where there is no contact with the water- the sonar signal is transmitted through the hull. To read temperature, you need either a traditional external sonar mounted to your transom, or a thru-hull, where you drill a hole in your hull to mount the transducer. Or at least that is the way it is with my R25 OB

Rob is correct. I added a transom mounted transducer, with a temperature sensor, and was able to read the water temp on my Garmin. The original transducer was unable to detect water temperature as it's inside the hull.

Another option is a thermometer gun. A simple push of a button and you can tell the temperaure of the water, your engine, heat exchanger, A/C and heat vents and many more surface temps. No install or modifications and available for $10 to $50 cost. Use it on your tow vehicle. Is the thermostat opening? Are your heater hoses restricted? How about the tire temperature on your trailer? Hub temp, is a wheel bearing wearing out or does it need repacking? Check your knees and shoulders for hot spots (inflammation). I love multi-use tools.

CaptT, what transducer did you use. And does it display water temperature on your Garmin chart plotter? And does it wire into the NMEA 2k network?

SilverSailor - On Garmin’s website, you can look for transducers that are compatible with your map unit display. My unit is a 7610 xsv. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/c/marine/b ... ansducers/ I put a GT 30 on my boat. It adds Clear Vu and Side Vu, and yes, it has temperature. If you have the same map unit display, it has a dual CHIRP frequency, meaning you don’t need a Y cable splitter - you just plug it into the unit. I did find that I had to have another 10’ of cable to reach my unit, however, so make sure you get that.

SilverSailor I called Garmin direct and spoke with one of their technicians. They recommended the transom mounted transducer I'm currently using, ( unfortunately I can't get over to the boat where my boat file is to let you know the model number), but you have to make sure the transducer you purchase will work with your sonar black box. My box is a GSD 22 Sounder so i am limited to which transducer will work with it. If you upgrade to the GSD 24 or 25 you can use a transducer with higher definition capabilities but it comes with additional costs. The GSD24 box is between $500 &$600 and the GSD25 is between $700 & $800. Based on this I am either going to upgrade to a better Sounder box or maybe just add a backup Garmin chart plotter with a new high definition transducer included for approximately $600 - $800 total, depending on screen size, and transducer, etc.
I just wanted to point out that some of the newer transducers won't work with the older GSD Sounders/chart plotters so you may want to talk with a Garmin tech, they are extremely helpful.
Oh, forgot to answer your question, yes the water temperature does now show on my older chart plotter with the new transom mounted transducer.
Hope this helps,
Terry
