We finally made up our mind and bought our tug!

After 3 years of internet rechearch,3 years of reading this forum, 3 years of waiting for the right moment, it's done! We bought our Boat, a Ranger tug 21 ec 2012. The tug will be named Novy. We went up to Ontario yesterday to do a sea trial, it is awsome. With 140 hours on the engine, it is barely broken in... Our trailer will be built in the next couples of week. We are glad to be part of the Ranger tug familly! This boat is our first boat, we think that the size is perfect for learning purpose. We live in the province of Quebec (french Canadian), water plan are everywhere around here, the trailer will be used quite often. Winter is coming up, so we will delay the launching til next spring... The winter will be long this year... Many people helped us on this forum to make up our mind by talking about there tugs, experiences...Thank you for that.
I would like to do a special thank to Lisa and Jim Favors, your comments and blogs are awsome, it gave me the will to pursue this dream to own a Ranger tug, Merci beaucoup! Looking ahead, when the time come, we will most likely upgrade to a bigger tug to do the famous great loop. But retirement is not for another decade at least...

Hello Pat,

You have made a good decision to buy a 21EC. And if you get a chance, get a look at Andrew's 21EC as he has installed a really nice Simrad Autopilot - a FIRST in the Tugnuts community. Maybe you've read/seen it here on the forum.

Too bad you have to put the boat "away" for the winter! You know, there is a heater in the cabin, right? So, unless the lake is entirely iced over, the tug can handle cold weather boating. A little snow on the cabin and ice around the edges is no problem.

Welcome Pat... excellent choice. I'm also new to the Ranger R-21EC and we moved from a 2010 R-25 (Classic) to the R-21EC this year as our boating requirements changed and we wanted to lower the boating maintenance upkeep. If you're are inclined to DIY maintenance the R-21EC IMO is a no-brainer as most things needing attention are easily accessed... especially the engine.

Do you have the Yanmar or Volvo engine ? I suspect the 2012 model had the Yanmar, right... ?

Take care of the boat during the winter period, and if you keep her nearby you can get onboard and dream a bit. 😀

With regards to Dave's comments, it is actually my 21ec in kingston that has the Simrad autopilot, and I am still very happy with it. Also regarding winter layup, methinks Dave should come up to our area for a winter vacation, we would love to see him. The ice at the end of our dock in the St.Lawrence River was eighteen inches thick last winter. The Dany "B" will be stored in a heated warehouse this winter.

Wow, 16 inches of ice...reminds me of growing up in Michigan where we would ice fish, go snowmobiling, etc. I've been in the south long enough that that doesn't sound fun anymore. The South is sometimes HOT, but, unlike the snow, you don't have to shovel HOT.
