We need a Southern California Island Catalina Rendezvous!

Would love to join as well! We have a C28 based in Newport Beach and get over there several times a year. Count us in!

We tow to Anacortes, WA and launch and retrieve the boat using their very reasonably priced lift at Cap Sante Marina. I have always used lifts and have never put our trailer in the water. I store the boat trailer for the Summer in a secure storage facility called On Deck Marine. Cap Sante marina allows long-term, free parking of your truck in their parking lot.
Now to the specifics of your question, we don't have a Summer slip for the boat. There are numerous marinas in the San Juan and Gulf Islands that you can get temporary guest moorage in. We usually go further North into Desolation Sound and the Broughtons, where there are also many marinas. But we prefer to anchor out and go to a marina every 4 or 5 days. You have to plan ahead for a marina around 4th of July and Labor Day weekends, but otherwise there has never been a problem getting a temporary slip. Our first year we booked a three month temp slip near Victoria Canada to use as a base of operations. It was a waste of money as we were seldom there because there are so many beautiful, new areas to explore. Use the Waggoner Guide and the book Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage for info on anchorages and marinas. You will also want to have Ports and Passages available to time your passage through some of the narrow spots. These passages are non-events if you transit them at slack tide.
The PNW is the best boating area we have experienced. We have done this for 4 Summers and have only scratched the surface of all the places to see and anchor. You will love the experience.
Thanks for the information! Sorry so late to reply. I kinda lost where I messaged you! I am almost ready to purchase a R27. I am doing a test run next week. I would like to do something like your doing in the summers, except I would probably have to do more planning as I would need to fly back home at least 12 days a month for work, so I would need to leave it at marinas with descent airport access. I am sure with a little planning that it would be doable. Thanks again for the information!

Getting home every 12 days can also be facilitated by the many seaplane flights that can be scheduled from a myriad of places in the Gulf Islands, Desolation Sound, and the Broughtons. These seaplane flights can quickly get you to an airport with international access. It is an additional expense, but gives you options to avoid boating to a big city every 12 days.

I didn’t think of using seaplanes from some of the more remote areas to get to larger airports. I am an airline pilot and can possibly get reciprocal jump seat privileges on some of those seaplane operators. I think we have an agreement with Kenmore Air.

Anyone ever use a tow service from SF Bay Area to SoCal? I saw the basic rate was about $1100 one way for my C302c one way and I'd like to pay about half to three quarters of that if possible for a safe and reliable service.

The Crew of Amy Marie would enjoy a Catalina trip. Our home port is in the San Francisco Bay area but we have spent every summer for the last four years somewhere else. Did the Great Loop one year and have explored the PNW for three summers. Always looking for new cruising grounds. If something gets organized, let us know! Thanks

We are new Cutwater owners, but the few times we have been to Catalina this summer we have met some wonderful Cutwater and Ranger Tug owners. Cutwater...we need an official Rendezvous here 🙂. Anyone else agree?
We've been a two or three week cruise to Catalina/San Diego/ Coronado Islands for the last few years on our Ranger Tug out of Santa Barbara. We would love to get involved in this!

Im in! Picking up my new R27 early January, I live in Ventura County.

Very exciting Sjdritz! My R25 was delivered a few weeks ago. We are really approaching a critical mass here!
Congrats on the R25! I think we purchased them at the same place in Ventura. Are you keeping yours in the water up in Santa Barbara? I think I am going to put mine in a slip at the Channel Islands marina and use it as a condo for get aways.

Yes, mine lives in my slip in Santa Barbara. It’s definitely the least expensive way to have a “beach house” in CA! And the view is hard to beat.

That’s for sure! Half the price of just the association fees for a 700 sq foot condo anywhere near any marina in Southern California. Great View! How hard was it to get a slip up there? Both my kids are at UCSB, so we go up there quite a bit to see them.

We just traded our Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20 for a 2012 Ranger Tug 21EC. We live in Sequim, Washington and have a slip at John Wayne Marina. We're looking forward to cruising the San Juan's hopefully this summer. Being a 21 we're thinking that maybe we should tow to Anacortes and launch from there. The straight can get nasty at times, we've been in a couple tense moments with our Flicka.
