Weaver Stand Off Brackets

I have have just installed the weaver davits for a Portland Pudgy on my 2019 29S. The swim platform rails are still in place. I am now looking to install the standoff brackets - I am curious as to what length to get. Measurements indicate nearest point is about 44" at the stern and little less at the bow of the dinghy. I have asked Weaver as well, but wondering if anyone here has done the install and has advice.

Mine are 36 inches pin to pin but I have a 25 Classic.

I'm considering some type shock damper design to keep these hard struts from beating the crap out of the transom mounts.

Any ideas or has anyone done this?

I use ratcheting straps (stainless versions of the truck tie downs) to pull the dinghy up tight against the brackets and swim grid mounts. This not only eliminates any banging but lifts the dinghy up a couple inches to keep it from hitting the water in rough seas. One strap from the lower dinghy transom eye bolt to the tug rail base and one from the interior dinghy bow eye. Solid as a rock.

I just got a list of the Weaver parts needed to mount a dingy to the swim step of our RT 31 from Richard in the RT parts department. I don't know if the recommended parts vary by boat model and dingy. His list looks like it may be for all. The standoffs specified are the adjustable ones: 42 to 48". Pricey. $187 through inflatableboatparts.com. $197 through Weaver Industries.

Curt, any pics of how you have the straps rigged? Sounds like both cost effective and possibly more functional.

i have the adjustable standoff versions (with swimstep rails) they are both set to the minimum distance.

it was nice to have adjustment however as you never really know if the mounts on the dinghy are equaly spaced.

they are expensive but the stainless is good quality and the mounting clip is well thought out.

like Curt I often use the painter and a line from the midship of the dinghy to remove some movement by tieing this to the swim step rails . if you get the angles right of the standoffs and the main mounts are well placed this is less necassary as the dinghy is pretty secure. most of the load is on the bottom mounts not the standoffs if you get the dinghy vertical.

I actually get more worried about the spray coming off the swim step hitting the dinghy tubes causing unnecassary loading on the bottom main mounts. so far 3 years in no issues.
 
Sounds like a good belt and suspenders approach. I already have the adjustable standoffs factored into my budget for the hardware, so I'll leave them in the list. Thanks for that input Gavin.

From Weaver - use the adjustable SAO 42-48" with clips on both ends.
 
Resurrecting an old thread... For those who've mounted the adjustable standoffs on an R31, where did you locate the clips on the transom?
 
Hi Ben,

The factory mounted the clips on my swim step, so the location is probably pretty tried and true. Are you looking for measurements from clip to clip from some particular reference point? Perhaps from the centerline of the swimstep or the stantions of the rail? I'm headed up to my boat today and will be happy to measure exact placement and post that info later if you have a reference point you want me to use.

Hi Ben,

I saw your reponse after I got home from being on the boat, so I didn’t take any photos. I do have some that I’ve taken for other reasons that may at least be somewhat helpful. Photo posting is still disabled on the forum, I believe. But if you PM me with an email to use, I’ll be glad to send you one or two. I’ll be back on the boat starting Friday for much of the next three weeks or so. I can take something more helpful then.

Meanwhile, I did at least measure while I was on the boat. The port and starboard davits are equal distance from the center of the swimstep. I measured from the center of the each davit to the center of the swimstep. For each, the distance was 16 5/8”. And from the center of one davit to the center of the other, they were 33 1/4” apart (as they should be if my first measurements were correct).

What I didn’t think to measure was how far in they are from the back edge of the swimstep. In the photos I happen to already have, it sure looks like the back edge of the davit plate that mounts to the swimstep is flush or nearly so with the back edge of the plate mounted to the bottom of the rail stanchions.

Trying to describe that is proof that a picture is worth a 1000 words.
