Andrew, I am considering installing a Furuno radar system on my R21EC and was wondering if anyone at the factory knew the actual weight of the radome. The R21 has many big boat features but in reality it is a small boat, and I am hesitant to hang a lot of weight way up on the mast. The system I am considering is the Furuno 1623 15" radar and all I can get from Furuno is the total shipping weight of 29 lbs. Thanks ........ Fran Uteg

Hello Fran,

I'm not sure of the weight of the Furuno radar since we only install Garmin at the factory. I can tell you that the Garmin 18HD weighs in at 16lbs.

Thanks,
-Kenny

I have a 19" Furuno radome on my 21 that talks to an MFD 8. It weighs a little over 14lbs and the mast handles it with no problem at all. It is attached to a 1/2" thick piece of starboard that is bolted to the platform. If you have a newer boat than 2010 you might not need the starboard. There is picture of the radome in my photo album if you want to see what it looks like.

Thank you for your responses ..... I did the only logical thing a new owner could do under the circumstances ..... I bought a Furuno 1623 and the dome weighed in at exactly ten lbs. We are taking "Reflections" to the Erie canal for two weeks and when we get back to Hartwell I will install the radar and see if I need the extra board on the mast ...... I think the 2011 has a deep enough platform to accommodate the dome base ....... thanks again for your thoughts .... Fran

Erie is closed for 2 weeks between locks 12 & 14.
Hope it does not impact your plans.

Thanks Todd ...... we are heading north next Saturday and will check on the status when we get to Macedon. There are plenty of things to do between lock 30 and lock 14 so stopping at 14 wouldn't be a deal breaker ...... thanks again for the heads-up ........ Fran
