I am the new owner of a 2011 R-27 Northwest edition with a Webasto diesel heater. Every time the heater starts up there is this regular knocking sound that the previous owner told me was the fuel pump and that when fuel was successfully pumped to the heater the knocking would stop.
However, the knocking is continuous during heater operation.
Is this normal heater/fuel pump operational noise? The heater itself seems to function great even in cold weather.
Thanks
Brian

It is the fuel pump and while the heater is running it will be pumping fuel, hence the “knock”.

I'm curious what you mean by "knocking". On our R29 the Webasto fuel pump makes a soft ticking sound every one or two seconds. If yours is making a loud noise, or if it's not regular in its rhythm, it may be something else.

If there are are 'knocking' sounds surely they are drowned out while the boat is underway. The 'knocking' is normal as the pump primes the heater ready for combustion but should subside or quit once the heater is fired up and producing heat.

The most noise for me comes from the outside heater's vent and can sound like a supersonic wind tunnel running. In my covered slip this 'wind tunnel' noise gets amplified and passing people get very curious/excited about it.

My experience is a bit different than others. I get the "sound" every time heat is required and the pump kicks in. This has always been normal operation for me.

Hello All,

The fuel pump will run the entire time the heater is in heat mode. If the Webasto is in vent mode the fuel pump will not be on but the fans will run. So, in vent mode you shouldn't hear the ticking sound as I call it.

Hopefully this helps!

Thanks,
-Kenny
