So, after several trial and error attempts, here's the "easy" way to change the belts.
First remove the muffler to get access to the stern side if the generator. Then remove the hoses from hi and exhaust-the ones going to and from the siphon break. Then remove the raw water inlet hose, the one coming from the strainer to the rw pump.
While there, loosen the water pump holddown bolts so it moves freely-otherwise you can't get the main tensioner out of the way of the main belt.

Now, remove the motor mount bolts (3). One under the generator/ control panel, and one fore port, also under the gen, the last fore right, under fuel assy.
Now the fun part...lift the stern of the genset (hx side) and roll/slide it toward the front of boat so the underside is facing vertical....trust me, it's futile to try and get belts on and tensioner back in place without access to the whole underside
Clean the pulleys and put main belt onto the smaller generator pulley-make sure it's between the outer flanges, all 7 grooves in place. Move the tensioner out of the way - without the spring it should move easily. Start the main belt onto the main pulley and rotate the pulley clockwise until belt seats between flanges. A thin screwdriver can help stretch the belt onto the pulley.

Fit the water pump belt onto the drive pulley, below the main belt, and then stretch onto the water pump pulley.

Back the tensioner spring lock nut all the way back to the eye, and then the adjuster-use and Allen wrench into the holes in the adjuster. Put the spacer washer on, then fit the spring on the adjuster. I then took a 19mm wrench and put the jaws onto the stud on the oil pan that hold the other end of the spring. Then use a small block of wood to push/compress/slide the spring along the wrench until it is "over" the stud. Pull the wrench out and the spring should be on the stud.

Then adjust the tensioner with the Allen wrench per the instructions with the belt. Similarly tension the water pump and tighten down the hold down bolts.

Roll back in place, replace motor mount bolts, and all hoses and exhaust . Start it up.
