What did you work on/fix today?

I replaced the gypsy and guide pins, then did the annual maintenance (grease) on the Lewmar Pro 1000 windlass. Also finished painting my VHF whip antenna

Replaced the impeller in my F300. Good as new, also replaced the water pump cup, O-Rings and such.
I fixed the leak in my roof. We've had several rainfalls/downpours and no water, yet.

Where was the leak coming from as I have one as well

Port side clamshell cable connections. Radar, anchor light, TV antenna. I just put some clear marine silicone in between and around the cables going into the clamshell.

When my boat was delivered last month from the dealer 1000 miles away the ratchet straps they used on the aft section to secure it to the trailer caused damage to the hull. They'd used pieces of carpet zip tied to the straps, and the zip ties badly abraded the hull because ratchet straps vibrate wildly in the wind.

I'd asked in another thread for tie down solutions and brewed my own based on other's ideas. I think it's pretty good. I used two separate 2 inch "endless" ratchet straps made of seatbelt webbing material and protected the hull with seatbelt pads. This kept me from having to use any kind of steel hooks on the cleat or trailer frame. They're also easier to attach. I did not put a twist in the straps here, but I will to prevent vibration.

We recently bought a Cutwater C-30S and I was considering replacing both TVs for smart TVs, but yesterday I decided to test Amazon FireStick in both and it is working perfectly. Easy to install, getting the power from the USB port (Okay, for software updates or any other sort of operation that requires more cpu, I will need to connect to an external power). Fire stick remote control paired with TVs, bluetooth paired with Stereo system. I think I just saved some money using 2 firesticks I had at home.

Amazon sells 12 volt DC to USB converters so that you can have a little more power

It took way too long for me to put the second one in, But installed a second Sirocco Fan for my lovely bride.
Also swapped out the lights for new ones that are dimmable, and have a USB outlet on them as well so i don't have to worry about the stbd side charge cords since there isn't an easy spot for one over there in a 23.

Last weekend I finally got the commoderizer installed, as usual what was supposed to be a "quick" project involved far more frustration than anticipated. I had to install a new sea strainer for the head raw water intake (its dedicated to the head on 2019 C28) and didn't have a heat gun with me to make installing the hose over the barbs easy. Crossing my fingers this fixes the need for a carbon filter on the holding tank vent.

Today was finally marking the anchor rode prior some expected anchoring this week and weekend.

How did you mark the anchor rode? My boat has 250ft of chain. I installed plastic tags that I bought at amazon every 30ft with zip tie. I tested few times in my slip to check if the tags+zip tie would cause any problem passing through the gypsy.

I did colored zip ties every 5 ft. Works good for the last few mo ths

I bought the "Anchorite" system from Defender. Good color and attach into the chain with small screws. Have cycled about 25 times and ZERO issues. Has sewn fabric tags on the links, and that worked very good, but all the tags were the same color and if you weren't paying attention I often lost track. This color system and the accompanying chart took care of that.

I marked my chain at the 1/2 way point (25 feet) with some white line. I mark the rode every 5 fathoms (30 ft), which is 5 markings. I used line whipping to mark it. Runs through the windlass without issues and has lasted me 4 years so far.

I went "simple" and just used some spray paint for now, large 2ft markings, or 1ft of alternating colors above 100ft of line. I used colors I had, and while I know the paint will wear off it was available and I felt it would be a significant enough visual to notice in the narrow gap between windlass and the covered bow roller on the C28. We'll see how it holds up over the year.

Lewmar ProFish 1000 repair.
In 2020 we replaced the windlass on our 2009 model R25. Had replaced the windlass motor(seized up) in 2016 and new that a complete overhaul would be needed this time so elected to replace the windlass completely. At time of the motor repair the windlass had a lot of water in it as is typically reported when people open them up. The new windlass installed in 2020 was a "gen 3" model with improved gasket on the split line. The windlass locked up while deploying the anchor on our first trip of this season. I was really disappointed that we only got five years of life out of it. Based on the symptoms and on my previous experience I assumed it was another motor failure. However when I opened it up the internals were in pristine condition with no moisture at all inside and no signs there had been any. And the motor was fine. So apparently the casing gasket in the gen 3 model is effective.

To make a long story short(ish) what failed this time was that the retaining nut on the compound gear(part no.51) came loose and backed off. The threads on nut and shaft were damaged. I was able to clean up the threads on the shaft but not on the nut. It's a specialized nut and is not sold separately by Lewmar. It comes as part of the compound gear assembly which is $140 item. I wasn't able to locate a replacement nut either on line or at local industrial fastener suppliers. So I ended up buying a standard hex nut for under a dollar and modified it on a bench grinder(pic below). Happy to say the modified nut worked and the windlass is back in service.

Good news is that the re-designed gasket on the gen 3 model of this windlass is effective. So Lewmar has corrected the biggest complaint/source of failure on this model windlass.

Android GX Wifi Display
Victron has a new app that turns any Android device into a dedicated GX display. I took and old 9" android and installed the app which turns it into a dedicated GX display. Works great. Installed in front of the wiper motor assembly. Instant display of solar, DC-DC charger, Inverter and AC & DC loads, much better than the Garmin integration and easy to do. Highly recommend for those who have a CerboGX installedIMG_3889.jpgIMG_3888.jpg
