Okay, so we get our D1-30F engine and MS15L-B reverse drive serviced as per the Volvo Penta 'first service' requirement. The boat (2015) came with a 5 litre jug of Volvo engine oil and a 1 litre container of Volvo transmission fluid. Anyway, the V-P tech drains the oils and puts 15-40 w Rotella oil in both the engine and reverse gear.

Sometimes the techs are clueless. I had a Yanmar "Gold Star" tech come to my boat when I was having the low oil pressure alarm issue that has plagued some of us. I opened the hatch and he said, wow, I have never seen those covers before! I had another "Gold Star" tech tell me he was going to use plain old 10-W30 oil on an oil change. So I can just imagine what your guy told you.

Before you hang the Tech out to dry, please tell us what your OWNERS MANUAL says is the correct oil for the gear and engine crankcase.

After all, following the manufacturer's recommendations in your new engine the right thing, correct?

Absolutely. Our manual does in fact say 15-40 w for the reverse gear - just wondering what the Volvo trans oil that came with the boat is for - and what oil was originally in the reverse gear?

Yes he was very good and he was easy to talk to and took extra time showing us some things to look for / do when time to lay it up for the off-season months. He commented how there had been a service bulletin some time ago and how some of the reverse gears were now taking 15-40 w engine oil rather than the original V-P recommended oils. It was definitely worth getting the first service check done there, even though it was a bit of a trek.
