Hi
We have a 2010 R25 with Garmin 5212. Does anyone know what transducer has been installed for the depth gauge? This is a follow-up from my previous question about a stand-alone depth gauge. It seems that stand alone fishfinders would do the job. Has anyone added a fishfinder?
So two questions:
1. What model is the transducer?
2. Anyone installed a Garmin fishfinder?

Thanks

I would GUESS that any other Garmin (and possibly other brands) could use your existing transducer which may not even be a Garmin brand but instead an Airmar.

I would pull the transducer cable off the 5212 then look for another suitable depth unit which has a comparable pin configuration.

Alternatively you could do an Internet search for compatibility of YOUR transducer with other sounder or depth guages. You will need to lay your eyeball on your transducer to get the model number for this method.

I would consider buying a cheap Garmin GPS / fish finder that comes with a transducer. They are pretty cheap and then you would have some redundancy. Just a thought. Go to http://www.gpsstore.com check out the Garmin echo map 44 DV for 299.99 and it's a gps preloaded with coastal charts. Down vue 50/200 Hz transducer / sonar is part of the package. Free shipping currently.

Not sure but I think the depth information is on the NMEA network. It does not require the 5212 to show. A separate display such as the GMI 20 should give you the depth information among other things. Might be time to add this item now. It is on my list of wanted items. I like the idea of having depth up all the time not just when I have the right screen up and selected on the chart plotter.

Your transducer is connected to a box called a GSD24, it puts the depth information on the network. The transducer does not connect directly to the chart plotter. In my previous post, i suggested a GMI 20 display, a little less expensive way is a GNX 20...around $380 on Ebay. Low current draw, black on white display.

I can't speak for your boat but mine, a 2011 R25SC, has a GSD22 black box much less able than the GSD24. This connects to the 5212 with Ethernet and then NMEA 2000 to the back bone. The transducer is on the NMEA 2000 network which allows 5212 to automatically recognizes its presence. The transducer is a low to midrange Airmar that is located aft port side, (pretty much lined up with water intake grate which creates flow bubbles that interferes with the sounder at speed). There is almost no aft position on the boat that is not behind some strake, hump or protrusion that does not create bubbles at speed. I guess I always run the sounder and navigation screen so I have never noticed depth not being up on the screen, as it is always up on my sounder screen. I am currently putting in a through hull (hole through hull) transducer and new electronics so I know all of this first hand, and it is a lot of work. If you have more questions about transducer locations you can PM me as I now know more than I care to know.

Thanks to everyone for all the information. This has been a great help.

Cheers
