Subject: Where do you store/hold your down rigger's cannon-ball ?

I have a down rigger on my port gunwale and the boom points aft. I looked around for a convenient storage spot for my 12 lb cannon-ball and happened across the cup holder on the transom's port side. It's ideal from the standpoint of being at the right location and the cannon-ball sits in it very securely, and there's no fear it will get dislodged with the boat's rocking & rolling.

I'm thinking of securing a cannon ball holder to the floor below the downrigger but near the stern. Close to where I would use it. But maybe someone has a better idea?

Do you have a cup holder where I have mine ? I can assure you my 12 lb cannon ball is very secure in it. I thought about havinging it on the cockpit floor but did not want to screw a holder down.

Bas I use the cup holders on my boat for down rigger ball storage, they work great, right location on the R-21, and the crew should be catching fish and not drinking! Bob

I use the downrigger hooks you can buy from Scotty downriggers supply and they really work good.

Personally, I would not trust those Scotty hooks with their current design. An accidental bump and they will unhook. They do look convenient for sure. IMO...an improvement would be to design the hook with a 'quick release' that would inhibit the cannon ball from being released inadvertently. An uncontrollable swinging and out of control cannon ball flying projectile can easily make a hole in the boat.
