Looking for some input on handheld VHF. I've finally reached the end of my patience with the handheld that I've used for the past several years. It kills batteries whether you use it. The problem is compounded by the fact that the battery indicator still shows fully charged batteries but goes to zero when you push transmit button. For a replacement I only have two requirements. 1) Does not draw battery power when turned off. 2) Small enough to carry full time on life vest when rowing dingy etc.

Any recommendations will be appreciated.

We have this Standard Horizon radio and like it.

Thanks for the replies so far. So how long does it take the battery to go dead if not sat in the charger? Couldn't find any mention of it in the equipment manual.

iCom makes excellent radios. I have a pair of M73's. I use them in the dingy, on shore, the beach. Excellent range so her ladyship can call for pick up from the beach when I'm out clamming.

Another vote for the HX210. During the winter I’ve left it for a couple of months turned off without any apparent loss of charge. I use it in the dinghy and like the fact that it will float and that it has an automatic strobe feature. The FM band works well as well.

Another vote for the Standard Horizon 210 -- we have one for the dinghy and use it rarely but it holds its charge for months and months (at least so far, 3 years old). Very well priced to get a spare.

I'd say Icoms are great too (have an Icom 2m ham handheld) so it's probably a matter of choice and availability.

+ 1 on the Std Horizon 210. Agree that it holds a full charge well for a long stretch if unused.
