I am not electrically inclined but keep hearing about these items for use on the tug when trying to diagnose problems...to say their are a zillion different models of them is an understatement.

Is the a few that will do what someone like me will want but not be too overly complicated etc you can recommend?

Thx

I have a Fluke 325 clamp meter. I wasn’t cheap but it’s very nice. I had a $30 Southwire one before and it worked fine for checking voltage and trouble shooting simple electrical issues.

Whatever you end up with, make sure it has a feature to check continuity. Sometimes you dont care about current, volts, Amps etc. You just want to know a circuit is not broken.

Fluke model 101. $49 on Amazon. Does everything well but not for current. Plus, if you’re boating in the PNW visiting Vendovi Island will be even more special.

I did a ton of research and ended up with a Klein 380 (which I think has been replaced by the 390).

I believe I chose it because it was the best for DC applications in addition to AC, and it was cheaper than the marine-specific Blue Sea multimeter that had similar feature spec (while still being a professional quality tool).

I bought one very much like this on Amazon.

Cheap, but measures Ac-AC volts AC-DC amps, True RMS AC- quasi sine will read correct. and Temperature probe. Seems pretty accurate compared to more expensive.

Also keep a Harbor Freight one that was free in tool box- good for volts and home and really cheap.
