Hello, we have had our 2008 R 25 now for about 6 weeks and we are still figuring things out. We live in North Carolina and it has been so hot the air conditioner runs almost constantly while we are on the boat. We have been doing some maintenance on the AC, cleaning the dirty sea strainer and the air filter. What other maintenance should be be doing to make sure the AC stays in good condition?

Is there any problem with leaving the AC on when we are not at the boat for a few days? If we cut the AC off while we are not here it is so hot inside the boat when we return, it takes hours to cool off.

We looked at the manual and we are confused as to which AC thru hull fittings are which on our boat. When the AC is on, then water comes out the outlet closest to the stern, but the illustration in the manual shows that the outlet closest to the bow is the AC water exhaust. Are the outlets reversed on our boat? Our boat is 2008, number 52 we think.

It may be a running change that put fitting in another position compared to the manual, as long as water is flowing when the AC is running and you know which one is supposed to have flow you are ok.

There are 2 schools of thought on running the A/C while away from the vessel . Some want to close the seacocks for safety when the boat is unattended . Some want the boat cool when they arrive . If there is someone nearby to monitor the boat , thats a good thing . There is also the wear and tear factor . Its a personal choice .

I would carry a spare water pump [the Dometic or "March" pump]that supplies the water to the A/C compressor . It will stop an AC from functioning and is not too hard to change . They have a lifespan .
Keep the intake [water and air] screen clean and make sure there is tape separating the cabinet from the output register so it dosent recycle refrigerated air and ice up and lose efficiency.

You may also want to give a shout to the Dometic people. Depending on where your boat was originally from (possibly cooler climate and waters) a larger pump may be helpful. A larger pump will push more gallons per minute through your cooler coils and may help with the cooling. They changed mine out and it made a difference.

You might be surprised to learn that these AC units have a special mode to operate a routine times (every 4 hours) to help keep the humidity down while away from the boat. The temp in boat may stay up but I suspect that the cabin will cool quicker whenever you return to baot and select regular AC. This mode must be selected. You must also leave the seawater valve open. It should also go a long way toward reducing odors and dampness in boat.
