Is there anyone using the wine chiller on your R-29? If so, do your use it when on battery power as well as shore power? Are you having an issue with it drawing down your batteries?

You are in my neighborhood so while funny in a way, (c-brats reference) you do have a power question on your hands and many of us Brats have experience with those so lets get some info. A chiller is a refer unit so it definitely takes power but the question is how much does it take and how often. What are the specs for the unit and how ofter does it run? Also what kind of house bank (amp hours) are you running?

Greg

Our wine chiller is on at all times. Set to 55 degrees, so more as a proper storage of wine on the boat. The longest run from battery power is two days on the hook, so I'm not sure that our experience will provide the information you are looking for.

Shared Dreams,
We too have our wine chiller set at 55 degrees. After three to four hours it has drawn the batteries down to 12.2 volts. It is interesting that you can go two days on the hook without an issue.

Just curious if anyone else was having this issue.

Glad we gave those C-Brats a laugh........ The difference being, Ranger Tugs takes good care of their owners unlike some other builders.........

The early R 29s were 110V with a small inverter I believe . Then they went to a 12V unit . Not sure when the change was made , but it would be interesting to know which version you have .
BTW when you buy a C Dory or Ranger from Wefings , we take care of you . FYI

Marc,
We have the twelve volt model.

Hi all,

Just as a point of reference, when I was checking the specs on all of the appliances, I noted that the refrigerator draws 2.5 amps and the wine chiller 4.0 amps. Set at a higher temp than the refrigerator and having less volume I would expect that the chiller would cycle less frequently and for shorter periods so would draw less than the refer but only slightly so on a daily basis.

I will thoroughly check that out next week when I take delivery of my boat as there will always be wine in my chiller.

I would venture to say the Haier Wine cooler has a conventional compressor and the Nova Cool fridge has a Danfoss unit . The Danfoss is pretty efficient . Hence explaining the power usage discrepancy .

Well, the temperatures the last two weeks were pretty hot in Seattle. This week is more typical of summer temps in the PNW. Maybe the hot weather helped contribute to Karma's issue.

Our orientation cruise with Andrew on the new Wolf Pack is this coming Friday (YIPPPPEEEEEE!!!). We will be sure and discuss this dilemma with Andrew, since the wine chiller will be VERY important in the life of Wolf Pack as well.

Hello All
If you want to be sure to keep that wine cooler running, consider the solar panel. We are thrilled with our solar panel. We keep that cooler on all of the time. Bottles of Perrier fit perfectly and don't take up space in the frig. Sure, we have wine in there too! Gee, guys, what a great problem to have... how to keep my wine cool on my Ranger Tug!!
Harmony

Harmony,

How many solar panels do you have and how many watts are they ????

We forgot to ask Andrew about this on our orientation cruise with him. However, the Wolf Pack came delivered with the 2'x4' solar panel which is an option on the 2011 R29's. We have had wine in the chiller, since delivery, at a constant 57 degrees (whether under way, at dock or on overnight anchor---and we have been all three in our first week) with no wine chiller issues to date. And, incidentally, our refrigerator has also been turned on that whole time. I didn't write down any actual figures yet, but we haven't noticed any significant draw from these two appliances when on the hook overnight. If I think about it, I will do more dilligent record-keeping next time we are at anchor overnight for those interested.

Two weeks ago we replaced the original AGM batteries with a fresh set and had no issues this past weekend. We tied up to the mooring poles at Blake Island around noon, placed our two 12 x 12 Sunsei Solar Panels on the roof, ran the stereo, frig, wine chiller all afternoon with no issues. Over night the batteries dropped from 12.8 to 12.4 volts running the frig and wine chiller.

It appears that the issue must have been a bad battery.

Have had no battery problems with the wine chiller on our 29 ( Hull #2 ).

One problem I had. Last week, Southbound on the Harlem River, bound for Hell's Gate and LI Sound. Strict no wake zone.
Some moron in a 42 - 45 ft exp cruiser comes flying past me, same direction, 20, 25 knots, about 15 feet away from me.
I don't think I have ever been rocked like that in 40 years on the water. All 6 wine bottles came flying out of the cooler.
( everything that was not bolted down went flying as well. anyone in the cockpit might have been tossed from the boat too ) . I will devise some sort of latch to prevent a repeat of that.

As for the idiot ? What can I say. You can imagine how I felt. Thankfully, for both of us I was not able to confront him.
I reported him to the USCG and NYPD Harbour unit. Just a description and name, too fast to get the reg #.
